Keeping our Seniors Healthy

Rebecca arrived in San Diego eight years ago from Michigan to be near her son and his family. Although she had relinquished her car, she was a vibrant senior and active community member, volunteering at her grandson's school, visiting friends, and sending get-well cards to those in need.

Everything changed last October when a nasty fall resulted in a slipped disc in Rebecca's back. The painful injury required twice-weekly physical therapy treatments, and public transportation was not an option.   Thankfully Rebecca's social worker recommended ElderHelp. Our volunteer, Yvonne, immediately stepped up to help Rebecca, transporting her to appointments staying through the session, and returning her home safely. Two more volunteers, Al & Angie, offered to take her grocery shopping so she doesn't have to reach for high items at the store; then they carry her packages up to her second-floor apartment so her shelves are stocked again.

Rebecca is awed by her ElderHelp drivers and is amazed by their professionalism and compassion for her well-being. Another surgery may be on the horizon, but Rebecca takes comfort in knowing that ElderHelp is here to support her needs.
iEngageU Brings Leaders Together

ElderHelp CEO/Executive Director Deb Martin joined leaders from the   2-1-1 Connections Center and the  Multicultural Health Foundation at a recent iEngageU forum to discuss Community Health & Wellness:  Connections and Strategies.  Sponsored by the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, "iEngage U is the next step in bringing information and research about the region's most critical health-and-wellness related issues to light," states AHF Director, Nancy Sasaki.  The panelists stressed the importance of finding synergy and aligning mission, values and vision with your partners.  "True collaboration requires integration,"  Deb observed.  "When we work together, we can change the local culture and achieve greater impact."  The sold-out forum was attended by nonprofit leaders throughout the county who gained useful insight on building a wellness infrastructure for San Diego.
