With Playoff Season Underway, UF Researchers Offer A Safer Football Helmet

A new helmet designed by a University of Florida professor may help better protect against concussions by taking into account the two specific types of force, linear and rotational, that players encounter during a game. While this project is still in the very early research phase and has not been tested on humans yet, the potential implications spread from kid's sports to professional athletes to soldiers in armed combat.

Simple Vision Tests Could Improve Sideline Concussion Diagnosis

New research presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 66th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia indicates that a quick vision test combined with a series of other simple tests could yield accurate concussion detection rates on the sidelines of a game.

 

Effect of Cognitive Activity Level on Duration of Post-Concussion Symptoms

This is the abstract of a recent study conducted with 335 adolescent athletes. Findings show that increased cognitive activity after concussion is associated with longer recovery from concussion.

A team from the University of Pennsylvania and Baylor College of Medicine reports that a protein called SNTF is a promising indicator of which patients with concussions are likely to experience chronic brain deficits.
