YOUR VOICE IS URGENTLY NEEDED: Tell our Leaders to Welcome Syrian Refugees!

As people across the United States are donating to help Syrian refugees abroad and volunteering to welcome refugees in their communities, a number of Governors recently announced that they want to stop their states from resettling Syrian refugees. This is morally reprehensible and goes against our faith values and everything for which the United States stands. Some Members of Congress have even introduced legislation that would stop refugee resettlement altogether.

Pledging!

What is a "pledge?"   It's a statement of your intention of how much you (and your family) plan to give in support of the church in the coming year.  Pledging helps us plan how much we can undertake the following year in ministry and mission.  At UCG, we usually collect pledges in November as a help in planning the following year's budget.

As a national average, a typical church-going family donates about 2.9% of their household net income to their church.  Traditionally, Christian churches have suggested the tithe--giving 10% of one's income away for the good of others.  My wife and I have tithed for 21 of the 23 years we've been married.  And we've discovered that the truth is--most of us can learn to live with less.  (Not all, but most!)

Each person's situation is different and there's an ebb and flow of life we have to be faithful to attend to for the good of ourselves and our families (in our own situation--there were two years in our married life when, because one of us was out of work--we just couldn't affort to tithe).  That's a given.

But at least once a year, it's good to ask ourselves, "Am I leaving behind some good in my wake?  Am I leaving behind as much as I'd like?"

There is a unique joy we experience when we're generous with our time, talent and  treasure--it's summed up in the old adage, "it is more blessed to give than to receive."

Thanks to all of you who support UCG in whatever ways you're able.  Every wholehearted gift is transformative for giver and receiver alike!

Shalom, Dwight

Peace & Justice
Discernment Groups!
Two of the large concerns that face us and our society are Climate Change/Earth Care and Racism/Black Lives Matter. What do we as individuals know and need to know about each? What can individuals do about each concern? Can UCG play a role in responding to these concerns?
If you are interested in being a part of either discernment group, please call or email Pastor Dwight and indicate which group you'd like to join 740-587-0336

Thought for the Day

"The root of joy is gratefulness...
It is not joy that makes us grateful;
it is gratitude that makes us joyful."

- Br. David Steindal-Rast from
  Gratefulness, The Heart of Prayer
As we near this season when we're reminded once again of the value of giving thanks, I recalled that...

UCGers all around the country and the world are doing some wonderful work for the common good!

Here's a picture we recently received of recent Denison graduate, Megan Hart, taken in Yaounde, Cameroon, at her swearing her in as an official Peace Corp Volunteer!  Congrats and best wishes, Megan!

This Sunday, we gather for an Agape Meal All Age Worship in the Annex Gym at 10 AM.  You can contribute to the celebration in a couple of ways:

(1) by bringing in a hand-made quilt that has meaning to you!  We're going to hang these around the gym, as the theme of the service will be
"Stitching our Stories Together: Passing the Good On Through the Generations."  On a 3X5 card, share a few words about the quilt's meaning for you, and we'll attach it so that people can read about its "story."

(2) or by bringing bread, cheese, crackers, fruits, veggies or drinks to share during worship, thus Agape
Meal!

Also remember that UCG is co-sponsoring a Thanksgiving Dinner (along with Trinity Episcopal in Newark) in lieu of our usual Lunches on the Square sack lunch distribution this Sunday, and
we've been asked to contribute desserts for that initiative.   Donations are much appreciated--just bring them along to church on Sunday (and give Linda Mossholder a heads up by contacting her by e-mail if you plan on bringing a dessert).

Thank you!

... to Patti Burkett & Sue Foster!
for organizing a great UCG Women's Retreat at Pilgrim Hills Camp & Conference Center last weekend!  So many reports that it was a great time of renewal and a wonderful opportunity to get to know others in a deeper way.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to Christ's mission at the United Church of Granville!  Our 2016 pledge drive goal is $136,000.

34 stewardship pledge cards have turned to date, including six new members/first time pledgers.   There are still 21 families/individuals who pledged in 2015 who haven't yet pledged in 2016.   If you haven't turned in a 2016 pledge card, they're available in the back of the Church and you can drop them into the offering plate. If you are continuing with monthly online contributions, please still turn in a pledge card.

UCG CHRISTMAS PAGEANT coming up!

Here we go!! It's always a good time at the UCG Christmas pageant. This year it will be held on Dec. 13th at 6:00. We'll have a whole church pasta dinner at 5:00--dessert and sides will be potluck.

*Rehearsals are during Children's Church (during the service) with Ken Klatt and Alex Farrenkopf beginning Nov. 29. There will also be rehearsals Dec. 6 and 13. If your child(ren) can be at least 2 of the rehearsals, that would be great. We are also excited to hear any musical numbers your children/family would like to preform. Our very talented Grace Gilbert will be playing (along with Alex) again this year!

Opportunities to grow & connect...

The Feminist Class  will be meeting after the Sunday service every Sunday morning except fourth Sundays. Our focus this fall is "Encountering God as a Woman." We will alternate study of Leonard Shlain's book,
The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image, with meetings where we tell stories about our own experiences with female forms of the divine.  There are three copies of the book available through the Ohio library system that can be ordered through any local public library. JoAnne Geiger at Reader's Garden Book Store will also place orders for local pickup.

Monday Book Group & Meditation...
Monday's 3 PM spiritual life book group has resumed in the Martin library, reviewing/reading the book, Radical Acceptance: Embracing your Life with the Heart of the Buddha by Tara Brach.  This Monday we will discuss the Chapter 6:  "Radical Acceptance of Desire - Awakening to the Source of Longing."  Please enter through the "Office" door.  Meditation/Contemplation will follow, from 4:15-4:45.  All are welcome!

You may bring your own zafu/zabuton if you have a set--there are a number in the chapel as well. You may sit in a chair if it's more comfortable, too. This is free & open to anyone of any (or no) religious tradition.  Peace.

Also this Sunday, we host...

THE GRANVILLE ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE

The Granville Ministerium will hold its annual Community Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 22, at 7:00 pm
at The United Church of Granville.

Each year, one of the churches of the Ministerium hosts this community-wide service.

The Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service has been on the Sunday before Thanksgiving for the last several years since so many Granvillians travel over the holiday weekend.  This year, Monsignor Enke of St. Edward's Roman Catholic Church will preach, and Jackie Dawson, musician at the United Church, will be gathering a community choir and church musicians from the Granville churches to provide music for the occasion.  The clergy of the Granville Ministerium will participate, and refreshments will follow the service in UCG's Chapel.  This year's offering has been designated to go to the Food Pantry Network of Licking County.

Ecumenical Youth Event before the Thanksgiving Service!
At 5:00 PM at the Presbyterian church across the street there will be a Ecumenical High School Youth Event (& food) before the Community Thanksgiving Service (which starts at 7 PM)... Middle Schoolers are also welcome to come at 5:30 & join the group. There will be pie-making over there and the pies will go to St. Vincent's shelter for the homeless at Thanksgiving.  Thanks to FPC's Trip Porch for organizing this!

Sing with the Combined Choir at the Granville Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service!  Sunday, Nov. 22nd

The combined choirs from The United Church of Granville, First Presbyterian Church, St. Luke's Church, Centenary Methodist Church and Church of St. Edward the Confessor will sing two anthems. The first is "Thanksgiving Canticle", a Mark Hayes arrangement based on NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT. The second is a Lloyd Larson arrangement on the tune KREMSER, "We Praise You, O God."  There will be a rehearsal before the service on Sunday, November 22nd at 5:15 and the Community Service will begin at 7:00 PM.  Anyone who would like to sing with the choir is welcome!  Please contact Jackie Dawson at 740-745-3393 or the UCG office at 740-587-0336 if you would like to sing and we will make sure we have music available for you.
