"The Advent of the Subversive Sacred"
at UCG, 11/27-12/24

The symbols & symbols of the Advent season are full of subversion and challenge--Swords beaten into Plowshares, Lambs besting Wolves, the Weak up-ending the Strong, Light kindled in Darkness, Roots--hidden from view, but growing stronger day by day...

Advent is a great time to invite a friend to join you at church!  The ancient Greek word for, "Gospel" simply means, "good news."  Let's share the "good news" of the Subversive Sacred in our midst!

Sunday, Nov. 27 - Unexpected:
A Subversive Season's Greetings

(A Gospel of Peace)

Sunday, Dec. 4 - Unexpected: Subversive Inclusion
(A Gospel of Love)

Sunday, Dec. 11 - Unexpected: Subversive Power (A Gospel of Joy)

Sunday, Dec. 18 - Unexpected: Subversive Vision (A Gospel of Hope)

Saturday, Dec. 24 - Candlelight Christmas Eve Service, 7 PM

Let us Pray for Healing & Peace

Much has been written about the horrific attack on students Monday at Ohio State's campus in Columbus.  Let us join in prayer for healing and peace in central Ohio in the aftermath of this tragedy, and let us stand by our Muslim and immigrant neighbors at this time when much indiscriminate animosity and frustration is being projected onto Muslim and immigrant communities. We appreciate the witness of our sister church, University Baptist on Lane Avenue, which co-hosted a prayer vigil for healing and peace on Monday night.

Trades of Hope Fundraiser
Supporting UCG's Rancho Ebenezer Mission Brigade

Come and visit our FAIR TRADE, "Trades of Hope" display table and shop for your Christmas gifts and help raise funds for Rancho Ebenezer's sewing group!

WHEN: December 4th immediately after the church service . ALSO during this weekend's Candlelight Walking Tour at UCG -- Saturday, December 3rd, 4pm-8pm.

WHAT IS TRADES OF HOPE?
Trades of Hope empowers women out of poverty, slums, sweatshops, and sex trade. We market our artisans' fair trade products, enabling them to make a sustainable income. They make beautiful, handmade items from local, recycled/upcycled materials made in their home countries (16 different countries represented by Trades of Hope) around the world, including the USA. We partner with our artisans to sell their products, using fair trade principles, telling their stories and showing off their creations. We will be donating 15% of your purchase to Rancho Ebenezer.

These are gifts that keep giving! Your loved ones get a beautiful item, our artisans get to put food on their table and send their children to school and Rancho Ebenezer gets to continue to support their sewing project mission!

HOW do I order?
You can place an order at the display table on any of the dates listed above or
SHOP directly from the Trades of Hope Rancho Ebenezer fundraiser link.
Either way it will be shipped directly to your home in 7-10 days!

"Call for Dialogue & Action" on Standing Rock

While the media continues to only occasionally cover the many protests and actions going on throughout the country (such as the multiple major marches in support of a living minimum wage yesterday), thousands of people continue to stand together to resist the installation of the Dakota Access Pipeline through treaty lands.

"Many of you know that I'm part of a new task force established by the General Board of the ABC/USA--the American Baptist Creation Justice Network.  Recently, we've published this Call for Action and Dialogue.    I encourage you to give it a few moments of your attention.

Also, if anyone would like to be put on the American Baptist Creation Justice Nework's mailing list, let me know and I'll send in your contact information (a major membership drive will be kicked off during the ABC/USA Biennial Meeting in Portland next summer)."

A Fun Youth Trip to "Louder than Words!"
Thanks, you all!

A couple of weekends ago, a group of adventurous youth & adults went up to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to enjoy the current exhibit showing how music has helped to shape & empower social justice movements over the past 70 years...  Even braved a little snow-squall on the way back home!

Annual Children's Pageant & Church Potluck
Sunday, December 18th,
5 PM Meal in the Annex followed by Music & Pageant in the Sanctuary

United Church of Granville's annual pageant is right around the corner on Dec. 18th!
And believe me, you don't want to miss it--kids dressed up, Ken Klatt's witty script and 2 year olds on stage...it doesn't get any better!!

We'll share a potluck meal at 5pm in the Annex and then move into the sanctuary for the pageant. Children performing will need to head to the sanctuary at 5:30 to get into costume and do a run-through.

However, if your child has any interest in being in the play, there are many parts (speaking and non-speaking). Rehearsals will be Dec. 4th, 11th and 18th during church.

And finally, if your child(ren) would like to perform a musical number before the Christmas play, please let me know. 'Tis the season!

Circle News
UCG Circles are member-organized groups which provide opportunities for people to gather together to do something they enjoy or to explore a common interest!  Thank you, Circle conveners!

The LGBT Circle had a fun potluck at the SNCA Meeting House in Newark in November!  Great jenga playing, you all...

The Re-Imaging the Sacred Mythos of Christianity Circle is taking a break during the busy month of December and will reconvene Jan. 5th, when meetings will be shifted to first & fourth Thursday nights!

"The Breakfast Meeting" is a time for anyone interested to meet at the Big Apple Cafe in Newark for food & good conversation, the first Wednesday of every month--coming up, Dec. 7th.

Anyone interested in a Pickleball Circle -- "We are ready to play Pickleball!  A friend has lent us the equipment and we think the space in the Annex gym will work well.  Instructions for laying out the court and rules of the game are available.  Please call Louise (740-587-0336) or Judy Stansbury (740-587-0441) if you can help lay out the court in the gym (using painter's tape).  Thanks!"

Growing Older Together will also be taking a break in December and will be gathering next on Tuesday, Jan. 17th.

The next UCG Dinner Circle will be at Dwight & Kari Davidson's house (144 Beechwood Dr., Granville) on Saturday, Jan. 7th, at 6:30.  All are welcome.
