Lemonade Stand to Benefit Syrian Refugee Children
During Farm Market hours
This Saturday, 9:30-11:30 AM at UCG

The children of United Church of Granville are partnering with Granville Elementary School 3rd grade teacher Jane Ludwig to fill 40 backpacks with the items below. The backpacks will be given to children living in a Syrian refugee camp on the Greek Island of Samos. Click here for an article about the camp.

We're setting up a lemonade stand on Saturday morning (May 27th) to raise money to buy the backpack items. We may be inside if it's raining.
If you would like to stop by on Saturday from 9:30-11:30 to bring cookies to sell or have a cup of lemonade, we'd love to see you. If you'd like to bring any of the following items to donate, that would also be wonderful! Thank you all for your support.
-Ceciel

P.S. Remember!
Next Monday is Memorial Day -- the Church Office will be closed for the holiday.

Are these your intentions?
Make your voice heard about the recent
Federal Budget proposal!

UCG is a "Creation Justice Church," so we're sharing that our partners at Interfaith Power and Light have alerted us to some disturbing elements of the 2018 budget proposal that was released on Tuesday...

It proposes unprecedented cuts:

* It would cut the EPA's funding by over 31 percent, the largest cut for any cabinet-level agency.

* The budget proposes eliminating ENERGY STAR, a program considered the international standard for energy efficient products that has saved consumers billions of dollars on their energy bills while reducing carbon pollution.

* The budget calls for nearly an 80 percent cut in the Department of Energy's energy efficiency program portfolio.

* The budget includes zero funding for the Green Climate Fund, an international fund designed to address the critical climate change mitigation and adaptation needs of developing nations. This has been a high priority for us at Interfaith Power & Light.

We, along with many Creation Justice advocates fear that this budget would hamstring our ability to advance clean energy and energy efficiency technologies that create jobs and reduce global warming pollution. It eliminates programs that help low income people weatherize their homes.

If these aren't your hopes for environmental protection in the US, you are urged to contact your representatives today.

The LGBTQ Support & Advocacy Circle (the PRIDE Circle) will be offering an activity after worship on June 4th (which you're invited to participate in while enjoying/'after enjoying the Sunday Brunch) -- "we need to put stickers on over two thousand pride flags, in preparation for this year's Columbus Pride Parade on the 17th!  The stickers will invite people to our Open & Affirming area UCC. All are welcome to help out!"

The Denison school year is over!  So Sitting Zen (Zazen) is now meeting back at UCG on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00-7:20 PM,  If you're new to sitting, an orientation is available every Tuesday at 6:30.  For more info, see the FB Page-Granville Meditation

Coming Soon!
June 5-9th, 9 AM-Noon

The 34th Annual Granville Ecumenical Vacation Bible School is being cooperatively organized by UCG, First Presbyterian, Centenary UMC, St. Luke's Episcopal and St. Edward's Catholic churches.  First Presbyterian is hosting this year, and the theme is "Hero Central: Discovering your Strength in God."

"From the Ashes" Screening at UCG
Friday, June 9th, doors open at 6:30; showing at 7 PM

A compelling look at the lives and issues behind the "war on coal," From The Ashes premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and will air globally on National Geographic later this summer.  Through Interfaith Power & Light, UCG will be able to screen this film in early June--
before it's available on television.  Invite your friends & neighbors!

The movie will be followed by a short presentation from Tom Evans, an activist and specialist on carbon free tax and dividend issues, with group discussion.  Tom, who lives in Minnesota, is stopping by Granville on his way through to a meeting in Washington D.C. on the Citizens Climate Lobby.

This showing is sponsored by UCG's Green Justice Team.

A reminder about the UCG Message Board!
Since our What's Up e-mails come out only bi-weekly, the Message Board is an important way to get news out quick!  Please sign up!

As many of you know, the UCG Message Board is a Google e-mail group we can all use to pass along information about important events, community initiatives and even personal needs--directly to all others on the Message Board.
Since the bi-weekly "What's Up" e-mails that come from the Church Office contain news primarily related to events directly sponsored by UCG, the Message Board expands our communications capacity by helping people find out about, and to share information regarding events hosted by other groups (beyond the church) as well.  The Message Board also allows our Church Office to distribute important information in a timely manner between bi-weekly "What's Up" e-mails.
Don't be concerned about "littering up" your inbox!  You don't have to receive every Message Board e-mail separately!  You can elect to receive a daily digest (this is the default option), or an abridged version.  All you need is a Google account (please sign up using an e-mail address linked to that Google account!)  So don't hesitate to sign up & stay "in the loop!" Simply navigate to this address to sign up -

UCG & the UCC at the
2017 Columbus Pride Parade
Saturday, June 17th

Plan now to attend the Pride Festival with your church family, and the other participating churches in area United Church of Christ congregations!

This is an opportunity to show your support of LGBTQ equality and to experience an environment that celebrates each of us for our own unique qualities. All are welcome to attend and this year we have 2 options to participate.

1) You can... March in the Parade!  The UCC Group will have an entry in the parade once again this year. There is very limited space to ride on the back of a flatbed truck that will serve as our float. If you want to march with the group you will need to gather at St. John's United Church of Christ in downtown Columbus at 8:30 AM on 6/17/17. The parade is forming around Goodale Park in Victorian Village and then marching south down to the Scioto Riverfront.  (Pastor's note:  We will likely carpool from Granville as we have in the past--watch for details TBA!)

2) You can... Watch the parade with UCC friends at our first ever Viewing Party!
We will gather at the South East corner of High Street and Nationwide Blvd- there is a small park (Sensenbrenner Park) at the corner. This is perfect if you are not physically able to march or if you want to experience the entire parade. Bring a lawn chair and some snacks & water. There is parking near by at The Columbus Convention Center.

What to wear??? If you have a UCC Pride Pink or Purple T-Shirt from previous years please wear that. If you would like to order a purple t-shirt (same design as 2016) we can order you one if we have your request before Memorial Day. The cost is $10.   You are welcome to join us even if you don't have a UCC shirt-wear a purple shirt or something rainbow color if you have one.
If you have questions please reach out to Andrew Hill at any time ( [email protected] or 614-314-4918).

Thank you!
