Dear Friends of BB!

How is your attitude of gratitude? At Beyond Boobs!, we try to nurture and practice this attitude year round. We cherish it so much that we even have a special volunteer, our Gratitude Ambassador Gail Gruen, whose sole responsibility is to express and share our gratitude. In Gail's words,"Gratitude is from the heart! I love that expression which is also how I view and look on life. My way of living it is to volunteer for something I believe in! I found that avenue in Beyond Boobs!, a local breast health organization that helps so many women and their families! My own personal reason came when my mother passed away from breast cancer when she was only 44, and even though her light dimmed, I continue to hold and shine her light to help others! I have been the Gratitude Ambassador for over 3 years now and see every day how this local group of ladies support and genuinely care for so many in our area! I am blessed and grateful for this opportunity to be involved in an organization that truly reaches out to support with their hands and with their hearts."

We know that we have so much to be thankful for, and that is where we choose to focus our energy and efforts. We wouldn't be where we are either as an organization or as individuals without the love, support, and generosity we receive from so many people."

It appears we aren't alone. According to wikihow.com, "People with a strong sense of gratitude, love and appreciation don't necessarily have more than others; they aren't 'luckier.' They simply recognize and see the potential in their lives. A 2003 study suggested that people who cultivate thankfulness are generally happier and healthier than people who don't." As an organization that also values health (and happiness!!), we aren't surprised that all three are interwoven.

We asked some of the people we have been fortunate to encounter along the Beyond Boobs! journey to share what makes them grateful. Their quotes are below. Our country's official day of gratefulness, Thanksgiving, presents the perfect opportunity to begin practicing your own year-round attitude of gratitude! As you are gathered with family and friends to celebrate the blessings in your own lives, please know that we appreciate you 365 days out of the year! Wishing you a happy, healthy, Thanksgiving.

With gratitude and hugs,
Mary Beth

For my family, especially my mother. I am also thankful for resources and awareness BB! provides for the person or family member(s) who may feel overwhelmed or don't know where to get support.  Melissa Neck, Boober! Caregiver

For the difference that we are making in people's lives and the very nice people I volunteer with at BB! Kim Coulter, BB! Full Support Volunteer

For my husband. He has been really supportive in all my endeavors and will do whatever he has to do to make my life what we want it to be. For the culture this organization has created with the staff, volunteers, and our Boobers!. MB and Rene have really fostered an atmosphere that allows creativity and imagination to flow freely. Plus, MB's tuna salad, that is pretty tasty! Stephanie Higginbottom, BB! Program Manager

I am thankful that BB! fills a void that no one else is filling.- Board Member Bill Przybysz, BB! Board Member

I am thankful for my good health and my grand children. I am thankful to BB for the service that they offer to many women with Breast Cancer, and their families to realize that they have the support that they need while they are going through uncertainties, emotionally and physically. Debbie Dunn, BB! Sponsor and Boostier!

A Calendar to Live By 2015

Give the Gift of Health This Holiday!

We recently launched our eighth Beyond Boobs! calendar at the annual Pink Carpet Gala held in September.  Shades of Gray is the theme of A Calendar to Live By 2015.  Featuring beautiful images and moving stories of our survivor models, it examines the depth, texture, and beauty within the spectrum of gray created from black and white photography.  The most vital tool we have to advance our breast health education mission is our calendar, and it remains a significant source of our program funding.  Please support our efforts by purchasing a calendar for yourself and all the women in your life.  One or two are $20 each.  Order three or more for just $10 each, and if you really want to helps us spread the Boober! love and message far and wide, purchase 100 or more for only $5.00 each.  We hope this stunning calendar helps you appreciate the shades of gray that in your own life.  To see and hear the women in Shades of Gray, click here. To purchase your own copy of this unique and educational calendar, click here!

Join us November 16th at the Holiday Inn in Virginia Beach for an afternoon of dance as survivors exhibit their talents in a way they have never done before.  You will walk away amazed and inspired as we showcase them with professional dancers. Join us for light refreshments and drink, a silent auction, and an event you won't soon forget.

November 2014 Calendar Model of the Month
Penny
49, Diagnosed at 39, No Family History-
Business owner, mother of two adult children, and wife, Penny felt a lump under her arm and immediately went to her doctor. Testing confirmed breast cancer, and she had a single mastectomy, hysterectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. A year later, when the cancer metastasized to her bones, Penny was given a 50% chance of surviving two years. Eight years later, Penny is going strong on maintenance drugs and is inspiring and encouraging others as a calendar model! Using a mountain to represent her experience, Penny felt very scared and at rock bottom with each diagnosis. Encouraged by family, friends, and doctors, she began the slow, methodical ascent through treatment toward greater heights. Now at the PEAK of the mountain, Penny sees things more clearly than before cancer and derives great happiness from making everyone around her happy. When asked what she feels most, Penny's response is "gratitude for friends, family, God, and life."
