April's Heroes of the House: AEP

When a member of the AEP family suddenly found himself with his wife standing at their daughter's
bedside in Nationwide Children's Hospital trying as doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to save her life, it was a very scary surreal situation. They could only imagine how scary it was for her to have all of these strangers around, poking & prodding her and attaching her to big pieces of machinery. After all of the surgeries had been completed, the medicine had been given, the machinery hooked up, Avery finally became stable 3 days after entering the hospital. Her parents realized it had been that many days since they had slept, showered, worn clean clothes or even had much to eat. And that's when someone suggested they make a request for a room at the Ronald McDonald House across the street.

As the Winters parents described in a letter to us, this is how they remember their arrival at the House, "...we are greeted by friendly, compassionate volunteers and staff. We feel welcome and right at home immediately. It was in that moment we realized, for the first time in our twin boys' four and a half years of life, we were apart from them. It had been a week since we had even talked to them. How could we have overlooked something so important? Neither of us want to be home - that's two hours away from our baby in the hospital."

Of course, Avery's brothers were able to join mom & dad to stay in the House so they could bond and reconnect after such a turbulent time and continue to support their daughter until her release from the hospital.

When AEP Foundation was presented with the opportunity to became our Hero of the House for the month of April, making it possible for other parents, like those of Avery to have a safe place to call home, they enthusiastically joined on. With the support provided by AEP Foundation our families are confident in knowing that if needed, they would have a comfortable room and warm meals just steps away at Ronald McDonald House.

We're happy to say The Winters family is now home. And we're glad to say, "thank you" to AEP for being a Hero of The House.   To learn how your company can join our Heroes of the House, click here.

We Appreciate our Volunteers so Very Much

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner raised the roof at Hollywood Casino, providing a fun-filled evening to meet new friends and get reacquainted with old ones. RMHC of Central Ohio Board Members  Linda Cummings and Jim Davis joined Board President Tammy Roberts Myers in offering up praise to a group truly deserving of all the kudos!

During the night's events, Roberts Myers revealed that it's now estimated our volunteers save RMHC of Central Ohio more than $3.4 million a year in savings on labor costs. That's how much it would cost the average hotel with a restaurant when you add up the hours of cooking, cleaning, & maintenance our volunteers do 365 days a year!

Speaking of volunteering, if you would like to volunteer a group to make a meal in May, we have at least 8 dinner opportunities and several other breakfast and lunch openings in the coming month.  Click here to sign up to make a meal!
