Luncheon Inspires Crowd

Thank you to the nearly 300 supporters at PAIR's fifth Youth Empowerment Luncheon last Friday, May 4! Enjoy photos of the event here.

The crowd heard the inspiring journeys of several PAIR students from persecution and danger in their homelands to safety in Houston and exciting plans for the future. In the heartfelt keynote address, Garrett Reed shared his own experiences of welcoming and guiding newcomer students at Wisdom High School.

PAIR's annual gathering highlights the extraordinary accomplishments of refugee youth who receive the support and encouragement they need in order to adjust and thrive. It also conveys the strong commitment of our community to welcoming newcomers. And it provides essential funds that make PAIR's programs possible.

Thank you again to all who attended and donated. It's not too late to support PAIR's life-changing programs for young refugees through our Annual Fund Drive.

Spring Programs Ignite Students

The school year is drawing to a close, and PAIR's after-school programs have ended. Before summer programs begin, we take a moment to celebrate a productive and fun-filled semester.

Global Learners programs - in three middle schools in southwest Houston - began the new year with a trip to the zoo - always a highlight! Students also visited a college and PAIR's high school programs. Throughout the semester students enjoyed projects emphasizing STEM principles and problem solving. Mentors and professionals helped students craft goals for the future related to college and careers.

Students in the Global Learners program spent the semester in a reading challenge; two of our schools read over 500 pages! They also learned about community service, working together to serve food in a soup kitchen, entertain seniors at a nursing home, and package food for distribution. After a great semester, everyone is looking forward to summer!

Global Leaders program - in two high schools in southwest Houston - helped students build on earlier social and emotional lessons and explored the importance of managing emotions and stress, support systems, and role models. Among guest speakers were an expert who led mindfulness training and a scientist from NASA.

Both high schools, along with the Global Scholars (community mentoring) program, participated in four joint field trips, building the PAIR community. Along with a college visit, students made a surprise trip to the movies to see  Black Panther and attended a Dynamo game. They gave back to the community, working together in the Westbury Community Garden and helping at FotoFest. They also mentored middle school students during their visits, giving them a glimpse into high school life.

After such a successful and fun filled semester of learning, we are looking forward to our upcoming summer program. Keep an eye out for updates about all of PAIR's summer activities in later editions of PAIR News.
