President's Message - November 2015
I have now been in office for just over four months. My fellow colleagues at Council have been busy assisting our local PTA leaders and bringing in new PTA leaders which is why this post is slightly delayed than my usual pace. One of the best parts of my "job" is the opportunity to meet with parents, community members, school administrators, and other supporters of PTA and seeing their passion to make a difference in the lives of children at their schools. The mission of PTA - "To realize every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children." is very near and dear to my heart. One way that SDUCPTA has done to fulfill this mission is to support ALL schools to participate in the National Parent Involvement Day, which is celebrated on the third Thursday of November and this year it lands on November 19, 2015. Understanding the CAASPP
Do you have questions about what the new assessment scores mean for your child?
California State PTA held a webinar to help answer some of the questions parents may have about the new California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and will be offering the same presentation with the support of Ninth District PTA on November 12, 2015 starting at 6:30 pm at the San Diego County Office of Education (click
here for more information).
If you are unable to make it to the Ninth District PTA event on November 12, here's a recap from the webinar

What is a Parliamentarian?
Have you asked that question recently? Come on, be honest... My name is Derby Pattengill and I am the Council Parliamentarian. As I was starting in PTA a few years ago, I asked that question myself. I believe I was even appointed parliamentarian of a unit and then had to look up the job description to finally understand.
Let me just take a few minutes to explain this very important appointed board opposition. A parliamentarian of the PTA is an expert in the rules of order and the proper procedures for the conduct of meetings of deliberate assemblies(PTA meetings for us). The parliamentarian assists the organization in the drafting and interpretation of bylaws and rules of order and the planning and conduct of meetings.
Public Education Investment Model
Recently the San Diego Board of Education and Superintendent Cindy Marten approved an advocacy plan to address the issue of funding for education. Often times in advocacy efforts to our local legislators and representatives when advocates for education carries the message that education needs more funding, legislators turns the table on the advocates and asks, "how much?" There isn't a simple answer to this question and the SDUSD has come up with information and resources that can help answer that question.
