QUITE A YEAR - NEVER A DULL MOMENT!
by Margie Montgomery, Executive Director, KRLA
As I look back, just a few weeks ago I should have seen that trouble was around the corner.

After over 40 years of lobbying in Frankfort, variety has been the spice of life for me and our fellow and sister lobbying buddies. It was never boring. Even when Greg Stumbo, Kathy Stein, or Mary Lou Marzian - pro-abortion legislative leaders - blasted our proposals from the floor, as we watched the “scoreboard,” support our bills always seemed to muster when we received fair hearings.

NATIONAL NEWS STORIES:
This year had been different. We arrived with four “chosen” bills to move Kentucky forward in the pro-life arena and were well-received by overwhelming numbers of pro-life legislators in both the Senate and the House. Yet, it seemed so slow for the bills to be scheduled for committee hearings in January. Even though we have been in a 60-day session, by the time the first hearing was held on our bills, the session was a third over.

The first bill to receive action was the Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act . As of September 6, 2017, eight states had such laws, and on March 12th our Kentucky House passed this protective law, 71 - 11. The bill then passed the Kentucky Senate 31 - 7. The Senate has only 38 Senators, both Democrats and Republicans.

However, due to the uncertainty in both the House and Senate with the conferences on budget problems, our Web Cam abortion bill has been languishing in the House Health and Family Services Committee since March first. We have been assured the bill will be successfully voted on before the 60th and last official day of the session.

As for our other bills, we will report on them in our next letter. Please know we appreciate your support, your calls to legislators, and especially your prayers!
