World Trade Center:

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the 13th Precinct

GPBA President Arlene Harrison Remarks

On 9/11, as our first responders raced into burning buildings as thousands fled, the headline flashed around the world "They saved everyone but themselves."

23 NYPD and 37 Port Authority Police Officers died that day, for a total of 60, and 343 FDNY died that day.

Even now, 17 years later, hundreds of first responders continue to die on a regular basis of 9/11 related complications. Here are the numbers of the second tragedy that continues to unfold each day.

There were 400 toxic chemicals at the site.

The number of first responders and survivors enrolled for monitoring or treatment has climbed to more than 89,000.

More than 10,000 of them have cancer. Most of those who have fallen ill were first responders.

At least 156 NYPD members have died from illnesses that could be linked to 9/11, more than six times the 23 officers who died on that day.

182 FDNY have died of 9/11 related illnesses.

The risk of developing cancer among 9/11 first responders is up to 30 percent higher than the general public.

All the families ever ask is that we NEVER FORGET their loved ones' ultimate sacrifice.

We can honor those who died that day by being the ones who remember.

It's the very least we owe to the victims and the families they left behind.

Thank you.
