Elevating Preaching is a conference that began years ago with a challenge from Buddy Shurden to “elevate preaching.”
CBFNC accepted the challenge and responded with two preaching conferences connected to the annual CBFNC Gathering. Continuing to seek opportunities to model good preaching and nurture leadership, CBFNC has partnered with Campbell Divinity School, Gardner-Webb School of Divinity, Wake Forest School of Divinity, and Duke Baptist House of Studies to co-sponsor the annual event.
On Monday, September 17, 2018, the Elevating Preaching Conference resumes with Wake Forest University School of Divinity as host and co-sponsor with CBFNC. Our preachers include:
Dr. Emilie Townes
, Dean of the Divinity School and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University Divinity School;
Dr. Jill Y. Crainshaw
, Interim Dean and Blackburn Professor of Worship and Liturgical Theology, Wake Forest University School of Divinity,;
Dr. Melva L. Sampson
, Assistant Professor of Preaching and Practical Theology, Wake Forest University School of Divinity; and
Rev. Alan Sherouse
, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church of Greensboro, North Carolina.
Conference Format
Each session will include a sermon preached in the context of a worship service. Following each session, conferees will have an opportunity to dialogue with the preacher about the preparation and delivery of the sermon in light of the theme, Preaching and Worship From the Margins, and the particular service in which the sermon was preached. Are you a New Church Planter?
The CBF Church Start Discernment Cohorts is a free 8-week online experience is for those discerning and living out a call into church starting. It is a creative space for folk who are already in the process of starting a church to explore and work through the vision and mission. This is a safe space for all participants who engage in the secure and private site. Participants will work through the basics of contextual church starting, introspective writing, and group conversation. Over the 8-weeks, the candidate will be accumulating his or her writings in a church start profile, which serves as a tool for the starter and evaluation tool for CBF. Future cohort will be October 7 - November 30, 2018.
