Who'd have thought that a bunch of 13th century poems discovered in a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria would have such lasting power? Even though written in medieval Latin and middle high German, you're sure to recognize this choral works because the O Fortuna section has been used in countless movies, television, and commercial productions. Music Worcester invites you to experience it for yourself as they host the Worcester Chorus for a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, on Sunday, June 3rd at 4 p.m. at Mechanics Hall. Led by artistic director Christopher Shepard, the chorus will perform the work with special guest soloists, the Worcester Children's Chorus, two pianos and a larger battery of percussion. The Worcester Historical Museum in conjunction with the College of the Holy Cross will host a frat party on Thursday, June 7th, or rather a discussion with author Diane Brady who's book Fraternity has been widely acclaimed, earning national praise for its story of Rev. John E. Brooks, then a professor of theology at Holy Cross who following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. drove up and down the East Coast searching for African-American high school recruits, young men he felt had the potential to success if given an opportunity. Among the 20 students he recruited were future Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, Pulitzer Prize winner Edward P. Jones and nationally noted defense attorney Theodore Wells. The talk is free with museum admission. After the discussion both Ms. Brady and Fr. Brooks will be available to sign copies of the book. WOO Card holders get one free adult admission with one paid.
It's the same, yet new! Get ready for Live at Sunset, an exciting new summer music series at the EcoTarium! Building on the success of their long running Jazz at Sunset summer music program, Live at Sunset will take place outside on the Sundial Plaza for six weeks starting Friday, June 15th and running through July 27th (no concert week of July 4th) featuring a wider variety of musical styles. The series kicks off with the 18-piece big band sound of Dan Gabel and the Abletones on Friday, June 15th! Rounding out the series for the month of June will be the swinging blues and R&B sounds of Roomful of Blues on Friday, June 22nd and the indie pop vocals of Lake Street Dive on Friday, June 29th. The Museum of Russian Icons invites you to explore an enchanting new exhibit this summer - Palekh Icons: The Enchantment of Russian Painting featuring eighteen works from the private collection of Berlin art dealer and restorer Thomas Monius augmented with eight Palekh icons from the museum's own collection. Exhibition components from the Monius collection include large and average-sized icons from the 18th and 19th century, some with unusual motifs. Well, okay maybe not so live but certainly bigger than life as the hero in Worcester Film Works first of three Summer Movies on the Common with a feature presentation of Raiders of the Lost Ark on Thursday, June 21st. A renowned landscape photographer and charismatic teacher Rosenstock divides his time between Massachusetts and Ireland. This solo exhibition presents evocative black-and-white views selected from forty years of his work, and representing subjects from around the globe.
