October 7, 2016
Hello all,

I am back in the office this week after a delightful vacation to the Basque Country of France and Spain. Upon my return, people have asked, "did you feel safe?" Yes, most definitely. The Basque people are warm and inviting. Travel is fun, it tastes good, and it's a wonderful learning experience. There's nothing like travel to open your mind to the world around you, and to ground you, and to make you appreciate home. Our tour guide, a Pamplona native, scolded us while he was teaching us about Pablo Picasso's painting, " Guernica." He said, "don't let anyone tell you America is not great. America IS a great country!" Do we all have to travel so a foreigner can remind us?

Thanks to Nathan Ugoretz for a great column last week! I'll steal his line, "see you at the polls," because one of the best great things about our country is our right to vote. Don't waste it.

Peace

Regional Director

SAVE THE DATE

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the  WEAC Region 3 Board of Directors meeting on Saturday, October 15, 2016 @ FVTC-Appleton, 10-Noon with lunch and Zone meetings to follow. The Board consists of representatives from every Local in Region 3 - - every Local has the opportunity to send their President or a designee to represent your interests at these bi-annual meetings. It's a great time to tell the Region 3 Executive Committee what you think. Express your opinions. Provide feedback. Share your Local's good news with others and hear what's going on elsewhere in the Region.

What's YOUR Best Story?

I'm a Member Because . . .

I recently retired after 41 years in the classroom.  It was an easy "fix" for me - I just took my stipend for being Chilton's president, and cashed it in on a lifetime WEAC Retired plan, so that I can continue to support public education (just from a slightly different perspective).

Join Us in Mishicot!

Mishicot EA has participated in WEAC Region 3's Listening Project and has developed an organizing plan to promote MEA in the community. On Saturday, October 15th, MEA will be participating in Mishicot's annual Pumpkinfest. MEA members will be sporting Association t-shirts and carrying a banner supporting MEA and public education. Proceeds from the t-shirt sale and other planned activities are being used to establish a college scholarship fund for Mishicot students.

Your members are invited to join Mishicot EA in the parade to support public education. The parade begins at noon. MEA members are meeting in the parking lot of OH Schultz Elementary school at 11:30. It may be easier to park in the middle school parking lot located on the east side of the school. From there, walk over through the fields and meet up with MEA in the parking lot.

If you have questions, please contact Scott Van Hefty at 4vanhefty@gmail.com.
