The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

When Dr. Marcel was a child growing up in New York, Dr. DiFiglia would come to his family home to attend to their medical needs. After taking care of an ailing family member, he would have coffee at the kitchen table with Dr. Marcel's parents while he discussed his findings and the treatment plan.  He was a member of Dr. Marcel's extended family and knew them all personally. We've come a long way since those days.

Medicine in the 21st Century is mostly depersonalized.  House calls are quaint relics of another time.  Many physicians now know their patients more by their illnesses than their names.  And patients know almost absolutely nothing about their doctors.  There is very little personal relationship between doctor and patient.

Our intention at Pacific Naturopathic/Hernandez Center has always been to establish close relationships with our patients and their families.  We want to know you and we want you to know us. Outcomes are better when this type of interaction happens.

To this end, this month's newsletter is a bit different than our previous, information-based newsletters.  This edition focuses on the members of our team and what has moved us to be where we are at this present moment in time. In the mix are also several informative pieces.  But mainly we want you to know what motivates us as we walk the paths of healing with you and your family.

Be Well.

As I look back over more than 20 years of practice as a naturopathic doctor, I am aware both of how much things stay the same and of how much things change.

In our first practice in Brattleboro, Vermont, many of our patients were salt of the earth folks who lived close to the land. They came in with simple maladies such as colds and sore throats, PMS and high cholesterol. They were practical people, genuinely interested in the herbs and nutrients that fairly reliably helped them. We used simple laboratory testing and made heavy use of old time naturopathic cures such as hot and cold water therapies, liver cleanses and fasting.

Moving to California in the early 90's, we were confronted with a different clientele. We saw (and still see) people suffering with mood and digestive orders, insomnia, allergies, autoimmune conditions and hormonal imbalances. Over time, the maladies presented to us have become more complicated, even convoluted.  Patients come in with negative lab tests and syndromes that do not respond to well indicated treatment protocols. We find ourselves using specialty labs and dispensing remedies based on biochemistry.

Through all of this, I find myself balancing biochemical treatment protocols by returning to my roots as a naturopathic doctor. I remind my patients of the Vix Medicatrix Naturae, the healing power of nature: of the value of fresh organic food in season; of the interplay of body, mind and spirit; of moderation in all things.

As naturopaths, we do manage disease, but we emphasize health promotion, and preventive and lifestyle medicine. We seek and treat the cause rather than the effect. We honor the uniqueness of each patient. We see that asthma is not asthma is not asthma, and treat accordingly. One asthma may be subsequent to respiratory infection; another due to allergic reactivity; another due to grief.

There remains the question of why we are seeing an ever more dizzying array of symptoms. The answer certainly lies in our increasingly complicated world. Whereas cell phones did not exist and the internet was a novelty when we started our naturopathic practice, we now live, move and breathe in a sea of disruptive electromagnetic vibration. Our environment is contaminated with radiation and chemical pollutants. With genetic modification of food supplies, we can no longer count on corn, soybeans and potatoes being corn, soybeans and potatoes. The polypharmacy approach to symptom management has created nutrient deficiencies and interacting and unintended side effects.

With all of these factors in play and out of balance, how could the imbalances in our inner worlds not reflect our outer worlds? And how might we respond and adapt? The art of modern day medicine requires honoring nature, spirit and technology, and incorporating solutions based on the evolving science of energy medicine.  It is in our enlightened self interest to educate ourselves as to the world we now live in, and to make the choice to change what we can change and to live with that which we can not.

Who I am As a Healer/Doctor

Dr.Corrine is a key part of the development and implementation of the intravenous therapy program. Dr. Corrine also offers Reiki and cranio-sacral therapy. Read more about Dr.Corrine here

Since high school, I have always been interested in how the body and mind work. I remember being fascinated by learning about the immune system, how T cells and B cells can recognize foreign invaders and dispose of them, and the beauty of how the body is able to maintain balance in all systems even with all the stress or pathogens it may be exposed to.

I have also always been interested in the mind and trying to understand why we do the things we do. I continued to delve into the body and mind in college, taking elective biology and psychology courses outside of the classes required for my engineering major. Now as I am starting to work more with cancer patients in our clinic particularly through intravenous nutritional therapies, I have not only been interested in learning about the processes of the different cancers themselves but also really enjoy connecting with the patients and helping them through their processes, whether it be physical or mental/emotional.

Currently, I am also volunteering on the Reiki Team at the Stanford Cancer Care Center. As I work with patients on the cancer ward, I often think of how much more they can be offered. I am struck by the busyness, noise, and constant disturbances that these patients have to endure during their stay at Stanford on top of the heavy duty chemotherapy treatments they are getting. They often either mention this directly to me or I get a sense of it as I walk in by the looks on their faces.

Seeing how things are set up at the hospital and how the patients are affected by these treatments, I think of how there are so many other things that can help them through their process. This fuels my drive and belief in our naturopathic practices and the things we can offer our patients. Not only can we support the physical body through tough treatments with natural therapies, but I love being able to really connect with patients, listen to their stories, and support them on a mental-emotional level as well. This connection of mind and body and balancing both for health is what I have always believed in, and I strive to support patients in all aspects of their journey as I work with them.

Why I Chose Naturopathy
Over a Career in
Conventional Medicine

Connie Hernandez, ND
Dr. Connie has offered natural medicine guidance to her Bay Area patients since 1993.

There are many answers to the question of who we are as doctors and healers, and how we came to be who we now are.

Early on, I found myself at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, receiving a Masters in Public Health, and inspired by my work in Fertility Awareness through the Honolulu Women's Health Center. At the conclusion of my fellowship, I received a gift on a golden platter in the guise of a full grant to attend conventional medical school. It was a fabulous opportunity, but my inner self turned away. Somehow I knew that it was not my path. If I walked through those doors, I would walk a path not my own and emerge indoctrinated into a belief system that did not fit for me.

(Yes, medicine is a belief system.)

The problem was that neither my path nor my goal was clear to me. Perhaps it was that I had begun to scratch the surface of teachings in spiritual healing and vibrational medicine... from David Tansley to Olga Worrall to Richard Gerber to Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. I was intrigued. Instead of accepting the grant, I journeyed and lived throughout the world with soon to be husband Dr. Marcel. With Japan as our base, we found ourselves with psychic surgeons in the Phillipines, herbalists in Indonesia, hand healers in Japan, sadhus in India and Nepal. I saw the promise of healing in the heart of the mystical traditions and in the "new age" religions.

At a certain moment in Japan, the idea came to a dear friend and I that we needed to hire a naturopathic physician for one of our projects, a corporate wellness program. To this day, I don't know how I even knew of the existence of what was to be my new profession. On a remote Indonesian island, I understood that I was to be that doctor that we were seeking, and my decision was made to enter naturopathic school. I thought I would find the perfect tools to blend healing of body, mind and spirit. That notion was dispelled as we delved into biochemistry, histology and cadaver dissection. At one point, our class threatened to transfer en masse to another naturopathic college where we thought we might obtain a more spiritually and vitalistically based education. Upon graduation, I despaired, feeling that I had compromised a huge part of myself.

Practicing for many years now, I find that the science and thought processes taught to us in naturopathic school are a firm foundation for the development of the creativity and intuition that are the art of medicine. I found Paramahansa Yogananda to be the ultimate naturopathic healer. Through his teachings, I come closer to offering that blend of science and spirituality that brings true healing.  As I journey together with my patients, I am enriched by their stories and blessed by my encounters with them. My intention in my work is expressed on my personal website. Click here to read the dedication.

The Evolution of a
Cancer Treatment Center
* * *
-- Using Cancer as a Vehicle for Transformation --

Dr. Marcel is part of the Hernandez Center and works with Dr. Corrine in the infusion center.

My daily prayer is that Divine Mother illuminates my path so that I may serve her with purpose, consciousness and joy.  I have learned that when I am in tune with her guidance, my life is integrated and doors open that allow me to serve even more deeply.

We have always worked closely with cancer patients at Pacific Naturopathic.  We never advertised that working with cancer patients was one of the services we rendered, but somehow they found their way to us.  Perhaps we would get two or three cancer patients a month.

Then in January of 2013, the State of California granted naturopathic doctors the right to administer intravenous (I.V.) nutritional therapies, provided they had received the prerequisite training.  By April, I had taken the training, our I.V. center was up and running and we had added the I.V. therapy information page to the Pacific Naturopathic website.

After Google found the page on our website, our telephone started ringing.  Our services had been discovered by a few cancer patients and by people who just wanted to improve their experience of life through the benefits of intravenous vitamin infusions.

Then in January of this year (2014), I attended a three-day cancer conference in Los Angeles.  While there, I pondered the dilemma all cancer patients face - there are very few reputable clinics where they can receive evidence-based, compassionate, effective, alternative and complementary therapy for their conditions.  Then inspiration flowed through me, almost as if my inner ears had suddenly cleared so I could hear exactly what I had to do.

When I returned to the Bay Area, I discussed with Dr. Connie and Dr. Corrine the ideas and pathways to service that had arisen in my consciousness during the conference.  When we had all agreed that it was a logical path to follow, we added a new dimension to Pacific Naturopathic - The Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. Interestingly, as soon as we formulated the idea for the center, the telephone traffic of cancer patients increased without any advertising and even before developing a new web site.  Dr. Connie remarked that when you do the right thing, the universe responds in a positive manner. Since then, we have had a growing, steady stream of cancer patients asking for adjunctive cancer care services.

I am so touched on profound levels by my patients.  There are very few veils in front of cancer patients' eyes.  The vulnerability, openness and depth with which they come to view and interact with creation is the way I want to live every moment of my life.  Every second, every breath is precious.  Life is viewed as a gift, and there is a yearning for quality and richness of experience in the present moment.  And it is only in the present moment where transformation can occur and we can commune with the Spirit that is in each one of us. My patients come to view cancer as a gift - a vehicle that can bring their consciousness closer to God.

My Journey as a Healer
and a Patient

Elijah Free, MH, CMI, CMT

The past several years have brought to me great and unexpected changes.

In my life as a healer, I could not ask for more inspiration and accomplishments. June celebrated fourteen and one half years working at Pacific Naturopathic.

I am beginning postproduction on a documentary video shot last year about my work with the healing of the first wartime veterans of PTSD. I had created an all-herbal formula that aided effectively in reversing the metabolic effects of spiking cortisol in veterans. Recently the IRS granted me a 501-C3 non-profit status as a medical study. This was highly appreciated, as usually non-profit medical studies are given only to places such as Stanford, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Visit us is a couple of weeks at our new site, www.bringourvetsallthewayhome.org.

I have been very busy researching and designing new herbal formulas and also in the midst of launching my own herbal label, Earth Friend Herb Co. after over thirty-five years.

There are formulas for PTSD, chronic depression, fungus and mold (our biggest seller), Alzheimer's, Safe Energy and many more. Visit us at our new Earth Friend site in about a month. Until then, you can see us at my regular site, rapidpainelimination.com.

I also became desperately ill a few years ago with a deep infection from a disreputable dentist. As a result, my health spiraled down to the point that I missed work for weeks at a time. This continued until it seemed I would never work again. I eventually created an herbal formula to rebuild my system, but my health still remained overall poor.

In February of 2013, I had a near fatal heart attack. As a wartime vet, I had gone to the VA to check a suspected congenital condition of my heart. The doctor ordered the wrong test, and then covered himself by lying that all was well.

Months later, the paramedics brought me in on life support for a completely blocked artery, more dead than alive. An emergency procedure saved my life, but I felt old and chronically exhausted. It felt like my life was over.

I studied cardiac chemistry and designed an herbal formula to rebuild my heart muscle. It was slow going until last November, when I made some made major discoveries in my herbal work that led to Safe Energy. The heart tonic along with this gave me my health back.

Last year I could barely climb a flight of stairs. Yesterday from this writing, I broke my all time running speed and endurance record, completing 5.05 miles in exactly one hour. My best time before this was 5.0 miles. I have returned to endurance and gym training and am in some of the best shape of my entire athletic life.

I like to be a good example for patients. Many watched me struggle to come back to work and then eventually conquer those disabilities that plagued me. I see these phases of my life to be an inspiration for other folks that might think their illnesses are insurmountable.

Sometimes all it takes is to witness someone doing it first. I was told that my life was pretty much over due to the amount of heart muscle damage sustained. Glad I decided to do something else. Hope you do also if ever needed.

        A Journey of My Own
Nicole Noceto
Nicole Noceto fills many roles at Pacific Naturopathic.

As I sit to write this article and reflect on the last several years of my life, in particular, I can't help but feel that life is exactly as it should be. Having recently turned 25 - I finally don't feel plagued by the question, "what are you doing with your life?"  If you're a 20-something year old, you know you've been asked this question countless times, and more than likely, your struggle to answer this question is embarrassing and confusing, causing you to wonder, yourself, "what am I doing with my life?"

For us Westerners, what you do for a living seems to define everything about who you are as a person - it doesn't really matter if you like your job or not, as long as you're making a living - that is what's important to Americans.  It took me awhile to realize how demoralizing this system of thought really is... why do we care more about money than we do about our own happiness or health?  How does it make sense that the quality of your character is determined by what you do for a living instead of by what truly fulfills you? Even though I am fortunate to have progressively-thinking parents who both encouraged me to always do what I love, this concept didn't truly mean much to me until I made a major attempt to figure myself out.

I took an interest in the process of self-discovery at a pretty young age.  Having gone through a fair amount of emotional turmoil early on, I often felt different from most other people my age - as if I was growing up faster than my peers.  I felt interested in understanding myself, the workings of the universe, and the ways in which I related to, or fit in to this mysterious world... it is this combination of internal questioning and external experiences that has led me to this moment - this moment of feeling more connected to myself than ever before; of understanding my place in this world; of seeking to nourish and fulfill my soul through what I do each and every day, and also by growing a social support of people who radiate intentions of love, compassion, and understanding. It is in this moment that I feel immense gratitude for this journey -- what it's held, holding, and will hold.

Thinking back on all of the highs, the lows, the confusion and shame, the excitement and wonder that has shaped me thus far, I feel perfectly comfortable with being led by my heart and intuition - I truly feel that experiences and opportunities arise at the 'right' time, for a reason, whatever that reason may be (and even if we never understand the reason), to ultimately contribute to our personal evolution. I have let go of trying to be certain of what comes next, trusting that things will work out if I follow my inner guide.

Living this way has led me to discovering my true passions - passions of which I will be grateful to apply in the form of my work as a yoga therapist and acupuncturist... but not before four years of graduate school to become a practitioner of Chinese Medicine! This next adventure will present me with all sorts of new challenges and opportunities, and I couldn't be more excited to begin in the coming months. For now, I am appreciating my downtime and continually seeking ways in which I can learn, grow, and enrich the quality of my life.

Nicole Noceto offers Nutrition Education for people

meeting the challenges of diabetes and cancer.  In October,

she will begin offering yoga therapy programs.

My 'Reel' Story

Jane 2013
Jane sees clients at Pacific Naturopathic on Thursdays.

For most of my life I have followed my passions. When I was quite young these passions concerned movies, travel, understanding biology and how the body worked.  But through the years one of the most important things I've learned is, when you follow your bliss you have to allow for that bliss to change.

My major in college was premed because I loved biology and felt I had a calling to help people.  But by senior year I knew that the grueling life of a premed student was not for me. The world beckoned with all the adventure and discovery that travel would open to me. Travel has been part of my life since then and I was blessed with the opportunity to live in Europe and Asia for long periods.

The film part was more deliberate because I went to film school after college. It was very difficult to get into the film world in New York but I persisted and became an editor of trailers for movies. This led to becoming a producer for all sorts of films - documentaries, commercials, industrials, shorts, and features. It was an adventurous life and took me to locations all over the world from Uganda to Egypt to Kenya and yes, even Iowa- I went everywhere. I loved this work because it was collaborative and creative - I made something with other people and I did it for many years.

Ultimately the old calling to use my life to help others became louder and louder and I began to pray for a new path. What came to me through various mediums - the internet, the newspaper and even a forgotten memory in my own life- was hypnotherapy.

But entering hypnotherapy school opened up even more for me. It brought me back to the body by the understanding that our thoughts affect what happens with our bodies.  I learned that genes and DNA do not control our biology; that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the messages from our positive and negative thoughts. What this shows is that the state of bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking.  By retraining the subconscious mind from limiting beliefs to more positive ones we can literally improve our health and outlook on life. We do not have to be a victim to heredity or even to illnesses we've had for years.

Essentially what I do now is to work with energy. That's really what we are made of, down to the smallest particle in our atoms. Science is on board with this understanding because of new imaging and screening techniques. What my journey has brought me to is really understanding for the first time that there is a higher consciousness that we are all part of and share, it's in each one of us, and knowing this is an amazing way to live.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- What the number ratings mean -

thermography

Breast thermography reports give a "TH" rating of one to five for each breast.

These numbers are derived from temperature differentials between the breasts, and reflect risk of breast disease, with lower numbers being lower risk.  We occasionally see ratings of one, most often see ratings of two or three, and less often see the highest risk ratings. Ratings of three, four, or five reflect increasing risk of developing or being diagnosed with breast disease. Generally, a rating of four or five would indicate the need for anatomic testing (such as mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI) as a follow up to the thermogram.

With a risk rating of three, we have more leeway. Depending on a patient's history, on examination of the breast itself, and on an evaluation of vascular patterns in the breast, we may recommend anatomic testing, or we may recommend following a treatment protocol for three months, and then doing a comparative thermogram. We recommend the three month time interval as we have seen effective treatments help in that period of time. Treatments are specific to individual circumstance and history. Among the treatments we have found helpful are hormonal balancing, infrared therapies, iodine applications, lymphatic drainage and massage, and use of targeted botanical and nutritional formulas.

Note: This original vision statement, written 15 years ago for our Hawaii retreat/vacation rental, holds true more than ever.

Vision Statement

There is a place within our collective memories that we dream about and search for.  Our memories transmit the feelings of this place

to our bodies, minds and spirits.

It is a place where the water is crystalline pure and the air is clear, warm and embracing; where the land is bursting with fertility

and food grows effortlessly and abundantly.

It is a place where opportunity exists for all beings to consistently express and manifest their highest visions; a place where relationships between people and the Earth are harmonious and co-creative.

It is a place dedicated to offering inspiration and healing to the Earth and the creatures that inhabit it.

It is a place that embraces all beings in a vibration that encourages their own memories and helps them walk their

paths with centered gentleness.

It is a place where friends gather to work, play and celebrate in gratitude the joys and wonders of creation and the bliss of the consciousness of Divine Mother.

In the creation of this healing retreat center

we aspire to the fulfillment of this vision.

Peace of Mind

Carlene offers various approaches to energy healing at the Hernandez Center.

I was talking to a friend last night and she said, "All I want is peace of mind and good health." I thought to myself, yes the two go hand in hand. If we are perpetually unhappy, stressed, afraid, and not at peace with ourselves our physical health can be affected. And on the other hand, physical health issues can impact our peace of mind.

During a talk given by Bruce Lipton, a cell biologist and author of The Biology of Belief, he explained that when a person has fear they may interpret their environment or situation as unhealthy, which can feed their cells in an unhealthy way, potentially resulting in illness. He suggests that by getting out of the "perceived" bad environment, the cells return to health. So in other words our thoughts can create our physical reality, especially when we hold on to them.

We have all experienced times when we are not at optimum physical health. Often this leads to fear and anxiety about our future and our ability to live healthy lives. Unfortunately these ongoing fearful thoughts can perpetuate dis-ease. As Anita Moorjani writes, in her book Dying to Be Me, "If and when I notice negative thoughts creeping in, it seems best to allow them to pass through with acceptance and without judgement." By accepting ourselves as we are, we allow these feelings and emotions to come...and to go.

After the passing of my sister and friend in 2007, I entered a time of deep self-exploration, seeking peace of mind. During this time I immersed myself in an intuitive program, where I began to understand how I was unknowingly stuck in old patterns and beliefs that were no longer serving me. Next, I enrolled in hypnotherapy and energy therapy programs. I was actually surprised at how many unresolved issues I had. I often tell people, "Even if I hadn't chosen hypnotherapy as a practice, the time and money for the program was well-spent on my own healing." I learned techniques to empower and heal myself.

Since then I have continued the self-healing process, and have come to enjoy helping others do the same for themselves. My friend was right, we all want peace of mind and good health, and achieving peace comes through loving and accepting ourselves unconditionally, exactly as we are in this moment.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

Corrine Wang, N.D.

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. We are often using this therapy at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients. What people may not know is that we also have many other IV therapies that are also very helpful in supporting our cancer patients depending on their symptoms and what they need.

We often give a nutrient IV in between IV vitamin C sessions, which helps to provide more energy and rebuild our patients that may be feeling fatigued or have low blood counts.

We also have other anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer therapies like IV curcumin (turmeric) or IV silibinin (from milk thistle).

Another IV treatment that can help cancer patients from losing more weight or to help them gain weight is an infusion that includes a variety of amino acids.

These are just a few of the protocols we have for our cancer patients. For more information or to set up an appointment, please contact us at the Hernandez Center at (650) 917-1121.

Practicing Therapeutic Yoga

& Healing Cancer

Nicole Noceto
Nicole demonstrates
the 'tree pose' in a
redwood forest.

As a long time practitioner of yoga, and a soon-to-be certified yoga teacher,

I am continually amazed by the potential for self-discovery, healing, and transformation that lies untapped at the start of each and every yoga practice.  Yoga is such a powerful tool for facilitating transformation both within us and around us, that it's almost a shame yoga is considered more of an exercise than a therapy in our mainstream Western culture.

Over the course of my teacher training, I have explored all types of gentle styles of yoga, from Restorative, to Yin, to slow flow, and therapeutic practices.

What I have been reminded of over and over again is that yoga certainly has its place as an active and vigorous exercise, but it's true healing power may be best discovered in the quietness of a more gentle and meditative practice.  In fact, I find that those who have the most to gain from practicing yoga are those who have limited mobility, or for those who deal with chronic pain or illness.

Cheri Clampett, a very well-regarded Yoga Therapist, describes therapeutic yoga perfectly in her training guide, "Therapeutic Yoga integrates restorative, gentle, healing touch, breath work, and guided meditation to create an environment that supports the body, mind, and spirit in the process of healing...the word healing itself means the process of reuniting, restoring, and returning to oneness. Therapeutic Yoga gives us tools to facilitate this process and a framework to let our intuition guide how best to use them..."

Nicole Noceto will soon be offering individual and group yoga therapy at Pacific Naturopathic.  Stay tuned.

Curcumin (Turmeric): Powerful Anti-Inflammatory Kills Cancer Cells

Marcel Hernandez, ND
turmeric

Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds often found in plants that can protect the body's cells from damage caused by activated molecules known as free radicals.

Laboratory studies have shown that curcumin interferes with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth, and spread. Curcumin can kill cancer cells in the laboratory and slow the growth of surviving cancer cells. In animals, curcumin has been shown to inhibit the formation of cancer causing enzymes and the development of several forms of cancer, thus shrinking tumors.

Human studies of curcumin in cancer prevention and treatment are in the early stages. Scientific studies indicate that curcumin is not well absorbed orally. Consequently, large doses must be taken for even small amounts to actively circulate in the blood. More absorbable forms of curcumin have been developed, and, as curcumin is fat soluble, it is important to take curcumin with some form of fat when it is taken orally.

At the Hernandez Center, we administer curcumin via IV infusion in carefully moderated doses so it goes directly to the cells where it is needed.  Preliminary results with our patients shows curcumin to relieve the inflammation caused by chemotherapy and lower tumor markers on conventional cancer monitoring blood tests.

To naturopathic doctors, curcumin is yet another gift from the Earth - few or no side effects with powerful positive results on health.
