In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- John 1:1-5; 14

Did you know that there are over 170 names and titles for Jesus in the Bible? You're probably familiar with quite a few of them: Emmanuel, Prince of Peace, Lamb of God. You've likely sung these in worship songs or heard them in church. In this week's memory verse, however, John uses a name for Jesus that might be difficult to understand. John begins his Gospel story by calling Jesus, "The Word."

In the original Greek, the term translated as "The Word" was "Logos." One definition of Logos, specific to historical Judaism, should hold significant meaning to anyone who wants to know who Jesus is: Logos - "the word of God, which itself has creative power and is God's medium of communication with the human race."

In Genesis 1, God created the earth and everything in it, on it, and around it by merely speaking it into being.  Jesus was the "creative power" by which God created the universe. If that doesn't put Jesus into perspective, then how about the second part of that definition? Jesus is also, "God's medium of communication with the human race."  We often just think of the Bible when we hear "the word of God," but John 1:14 reveals that Jesus is also the Word.

You are part of the human race, created by God through His Word. He wanted to communicate so badly with you that He sent His Word - Jesus.

Memory Verse

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- John 1:14 (NIV)
