Angels as Teachers
I have been with Durango Pregnancy Center long enough that former clients are now walking in with their 7 year olds! It happened again Wednesday morning when a young woman brought in her 4 year old to meet me (2013 baby picture to the right).
When I remember her story and the relationship we had, it is with a great deal of humbleness. She was an angel. She became my teacher.
Born with both developmental and physical disabilities she had been told from childhood by teachers and doctors that she wouldn't succeed in school and would never be able to carry a child. She proved them all wrong!
She went on to complete a college degree and carry to term her first baby! Now she's excited about a second pregnancy when together, on another visit, we watched the results turn positive. There isn't an ounce of bitterness, resentment or "poor me" in her. She's been homeless. Faced challenges far beyond my capability to comprehend. Truth is, I complain far more about a lot less!
Ultimately, I am a student of the "angels" who walk into the center. They have taught me more about the nature of love, hope and the character of God then what I ever learned in church. Resilience is a word I often use to describe these angel women. Even now, the home this client lives in is being sold. Nevertheless when walking out the the door she left me with this gift, "God is good. He's taking care of us."
