Who would have thought a cat would or could take on the role of family protector?

But for those of you who were watching the news last week, you saw the incredible video of the family cat who did just that as he lunged out...as if from nowhere...to save the little 4 year old boy from the vicious attack of a neighborhood dog.  This unlikely hero instinctively used everything in his power to protect the child.

That news story reminded me of our cat "Mo".  Years ago on a Saturday morning the kids and I had slept in.  My husband Jim is an early riser and after being up for a few hours, he slipped back into bed.  From the corner of one half-opened eye I saw him shake his head and heard him mutter in a barely audible tone "I have new respect for Mo."  Having peaked my interest I turned to get the full story.  He proceeded to tell me how Mo had been resting in the garage beneath one of the cars when a young, frisky Labrador retriever raced up the driveway-pacing back and forth sniffing, wagging and trying to be friendly.  He approached Mo a couple of times keeping a safe distance until his foolish curiosity led him to a precariously closer view.  Within an instant, Mo shot up from his post, dug his teeth and claws into the dog mercilessly clinging to him as he ran howling down the street.  As he turned on to the next street, Mo jumped to the ground shaking off the dust and proudly sashayed home.  The dog disappeared never again to show his face on our street.  Mo's instinct was to protect his family...or perhaps his turf.

Nevertheless, the instinct to protect is a powerful force.  It amazes me how a father penguin against incredible odds protects its chick within the egg by grasping it between his feet and belly while standing on ice for a two-month period.  Nature, instinct, love...these are all gifts from God.  Just as He protects us, He has placed His Spirit within us to protect and to love each other.

As we celebrated Memorial Day last month, we remembered those who died while serving our country's Armed Services. These are true heroes who loved their country and selflessly gave their lives to protect us.

As the 4th of July approaches, we will be celebrating America's Independence Day.  In the midst of the picnics, barbeques, fireworks, etc. take a moment to reflect with gratitude upon those brave men and women both past and present who are responsible for protecting our freedom. Share history and stories with your children, grandchildren...with our youth. Encourage them to be proud of their country, their heritage and to strive to protect those they love.

Remind them that we're all in this together...
we are here to love one another.

Have a blessed month,

Riddle Contest

I dig out tiny caves and store gold and silver in them. I also build bridges of silver and make crowns of gold. They are the smallest you could imagine. Sooner or later everybody needs my help yet many people are afraid to let me help them.

Who am I?

All answers can be submitted to [email protected]

All correct answers with be placed in a random drawing.  The winner will receive a stone of their choice up to a $28.00 value.

Answer to last month's riddle:
First, Annie and Bob make the crossing (2 minutes), then Annie comes back (1 minute). Next, Charles crosses with Dan (10 minutes), and told Bob to takes the canoe back (2 minutes). Annie and Bob will make the last crossing (2 minutes), which gives the total of 2+1+10+2+2 = 17 minutes.

TESTIMONIAL

"For the past few years I have been collecting different treasures from Holy Land Stone Company. I received a specialized plaque in honor of my Master's degree graduation, small promise stones throughout the years, and a stone in memory of my precious golden retriever that passed away. Although recently I received my most treasured stone from Holy Land Stone.  That is a standing cross with our wedding date and names.  It is a beautiful reminder of the commitment we made between each other and God. Thank you so much Holy Land Stone Company!!"
