Greetings!
As we were staring out the window at the stormy summer afternoon last Tuesday, we couldn't help but wonder about what was happening in the lowlands surrounding Van Cortlandt Park. It's likely that the Broadway Combined Sewer was beginning to overflow, sending polluted water into the Harlem River, while runoff pooled up around the neighborhood with nowhere to go.
It doesn't have to be like this on a rainy day in the Bronx.
CALL's efforts, in collaboration with the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, the Coalition for Daylighting Tibbetts Brook, and NYC Parks, propose a solution to the problem, advocating for a new linear park and streambed connecting Van Cortlandt Lake to the Harlem River. This will allow the fresh water from the buried Tibbetts Brook, and rainwater like we had this week, to bypass the sewer system as it flows above ground directly into the river.
On Wednesday July 25th,
you are invited to an exclusive preview of the first stage of
Daylighting Tibbetts Brook
. Two projects,
Finding Tibbetts 2.0
by SLO Architecture and
Estuary Tattoos
by Bob Braine will map the history of the Bronx Wetlands and demonstrate the potential benefits of the daylighting process. At this launch event, you will be able to see the progress made on the construction of the model wetlands and witness Bob Braine map estuaries on the bodies of local residents, or perhaps
be a canvas yourself!
You'll also hear from our partners about why daylighting Tibbetts Brook is so important to their work. If you are unable to attend the launch, worry not! We'll be travelling
Finding Tibbetts
and
Estuary Tattoos
around different neighborhoods in the Bronx in September and October.
We hope you will join us at one of our many events this summer and fall and help raise awareness about the importance of restoring the lost ecology of New York City. This project, and all of our initiatives, are only possible thanks to the dedicated support of people like you. Please consider making a
donation
to help us bring Tibbetts to the people this fall. You can also sign up to help
volunteer
this month on the construction of the wetlands or this fall in staffing the events here.
Thank you for your continued support!
