Why Hiring Older Workers Makes Good Business Sense
If you’re like many employers operating in the current job market, you may be finding it challenging to retain a dependable, steady workforce. Businesses can spend countless hours each year placing ads, prescreening and interviewing candidates, hiring and training workers, and still end up with employees who stay for a limited time before moving on to their next job. Employers dealing with the higher turnover rate of younger workers would do well to consider hiring older workers.

How to Help Employees Develop the Confidence to be Successful
As an employer you are always on the lookout for employees who possess the right combination of hard skills (relevant knowledge and technical aptitude) and soft skills (good communication, emotional intelligence, positive attitude, etc.) to be successful on the job. Meet the Out-of-Work
Local profiles of jobless adults and strategies to connect them to employment
A recent Brookings report aims to deepen understanding of out-of-work Americans, and support local officials in their efforts to help them find jobs. The report provides a unique perspective on adults ages 25-64 who are out of work in each of 130 large U.S. cities and counties (including Alameda County). In fact, if you go to the section at the bottom of the webpage entitled “Explore the out-of-work population in the 130 study jurisdictions” and select Alameda County as the jurisdiction from the dropdown list on the right, you will see the county maps showing the Tri-Valley. Compared to the rest of the County, the Tri-Valley is strongest in “moderately educated older people” and “highly educated older people.” (The federal government defines "older people" as over age 40.)

The report contains information on appropriate and effective workforce development programs to help local officials, funders and other stakeholders develop, strengthen or diversify strategies to connect their residents to jobs.

If you’re a small or medium-sized manufacturer (SMM) in Alameda County, and feel you might benefit from an outside set of eyes taking a look at your operations (for free), check out this grant-funded program.
