10 years, voices, reasons

Happy Holidays,

I am often asked, "What does a think tank do, and how does it affect me?"

In short, think tanks translate ideas into policy analysis and recommendations so that government officials can make more informed decisions. Think tanks also provide advocacy groups and the media with accurate information so that they can do their job better.

Policymakers are increasingly dependent on think tanks for clear and impartial analysis and advice. Too often, though, think tanks are driven by politics and ideology rather than sound unbiased insight.

For example, the decision to go to war against Iraq in 2003 was informed by politically driven think tanks that contorted the facts and misread the realities of the Middle East. That miscalculation cost us billions of dollars and thousands of lives. The stakes are too high and the world is far too complex to be left to ideologically driven  individuals that see the problems simply in terms of black or white rather than a careful nuanced assessment. ISPU's goal has always been to provide insight and sound policy recommendations while keeping context in mind.

Without ISPU, the same old think tanks that promote incomplete, inaccurate and misguided information about Muslims will continue to dominate and drive critical policy decisions. ISPU is devoted to bringing the top scholars to the table to ultimately change the narrative and the parameters of the debate on issues impacting Muslims here and abroad.

Policy proposals for the new Congress and the second term of the Obama Administration are being formulated right now.

So, as we wind down the year, please consider making a donation to our annual campaign. Your contribution will help us continue to provide insight and objective analysis to shape the policy debates impacting our country.

We are grateful for your support.
