Just like old friends...

As we start a fresh new year, Sonoma Humane Society has a fresh, new (old!) name: we are now known as the Humane Society of Sonoma County - the same name we were founded under in 1931! "One of the things we kept hearing over the years is that people think we are the government subsidized county shelter, Sonoma County Animal Services, or that we are located in and serve the city of Sonoma," explains HSSC Executive Director, Cindy Roach.

What hasn't changed is our commitment to providing love, protection, compassion and care for our community's animals. We are excited to report that we are starting 2018 strong with the incredible momentum we gained in 2017. Thanks to your support, we were able to achieve a 98% live release rate while placing more dogs and cats into loving homes than in our previous 10 years! Our 2017 Asilomar Accords are a testament to the lifesaving work that we are doing together!

These numbers mean so much for pets like Jackie and Jill, two senior mini Schnauzers whose beloved guardian recently passed away. At 9 ½ years old, and with special medical and behavior needs, the sisters might not have had such a bright future at other shelters.

With their inquisitive ears, charming moustaches and spry personalities, there's no denying that Jackie and Jill are adorable. But knowing that the pair have stuck by each other through thick and thin - just like old friends - makes them even more endearing. (Read more...)

HAPPY TAILS
Ronald and Pete: two of hearts
Ronald and Pete have hit the jackpot! Paige came to our Healdsburg Center looking to adopt a senior dog in need of a good home. But upon meeting Ronald and Pete, she decided to double down on her endeavor. She placed a hold on the sweet handsome seniors and went to get her home ready for their arrival. When she came back to make the adoption official, she came bearing gifts for the boys and our staff. Pete and Ronald got suited up in new harnesses and cozy sweaters and were whisked home to start their happily ever after with Paige!

Sarah works feline mind meld on local couple!
Anne was driving by the shelter and decided to come in on a whim. While taking a casual stroll through, she spotted the gorgeous Sarah, a sweet senior tri-pawed cat who was feeling blue over the passing of her guardian. Anne left the shelter empty handed that day but could not get Sarah out of her mind. She kept checking our website and kept seeing Sarah's amber eyes staring back at her. Anne's husband decided he needed to meet the beautiful cat his wife kept talking about. He came in and was quickly won over too! Anne came in for one more visit - this time leaving with full arms and a full heart!
A life of love for Olivia!
Melissa's daughter had been asking if she could get a bunny. Melissa got an anonymous tip (okay, it was from Santa) that they should visit the shelter to meet rabbits who were in need of loving homes. Here they discovered the lovely Olivia. Her sensitive and sweet personality melted their hearts and they knew she was the one. We were thrilled to send this lucky bun "home for the holidays" with her new animal-loving family!

It's Arya the dog's 3rd birthday party! Once again, the wine barrels will be pushed aside as the winery morphs into an indoor dog park. They'll be serving doggie birthday cake for 4-legged friends, and for our 2-legged friends, they'll be offering their 2013 Flash wine, a single barrel lot, Grenache Syrah blend, made in honor of their much loved 15-year-old Australian Shepherd. Only 180 bottles of this special wine were produced, and will be available for sale during the event only.

Happy New Year!
Did you resolve to cut down on snacks and get more exercise? Do these resolutions apply to your dog too? Often we use food or treats to reinforce good behavior, which can sometimes result in a pudgy pup. This article from our Behavior and Training Team shows you how to shift to non-food rewards in your training work. And for added inspiration, this handout is full of fun ways to incorporate more movement into your dog's day.

Our Training Team is here to help you build a strong relationship with your 4-legged friends.

Cici: resolution reboot
"At this point your resolutions are fast becoming solid habits, or they've been ditched like yesterday's leggings-and-crop-top trend (thank goodness). Me? I'm well on my way to making my 2018 dreams come true!  At almost 6 years old, I've learned to speak my truth: I absolutely love your attention and affection. That is, until I need some space. I'm looking for a relationship built on reading each other's signals. The goal? A quiet, cat-and-kid-free forever home. Is it with you?  Learn more about me here!  "

The couple who plays together,
stays together!
Travis and Molly are both 8 years old and have spent their entire lives together. These adoptable senior sweeties are looking for a home where they can stay together.  They still have a playful puppy side - watch this video of the pretty Pittie pair at play! And after your heart has been well and truly melted, read their profile!
