You know it's fall when the ice cream shops adjust their hours, and Miko's Flipside, the winter version of the summertime stand, puts out its shingle and Meghan smiles from the to-go window as she did this past Tuesday morning, above.
You also know it's fall when rib lovers convene in the parking lot of Division Street's Moonshine, as they did this past Saturday. The 4th annual Rib-a-Que competition was as friendly as it was tasty, according to Philin Phlash who there and snapped many pictures.
Chef Roger Herring of Socca walked away with the glory and the gilded grill while the crew from SmallBar received "People's Choice" props. Congrats and happy flossing!
| Chef Roger of Socca, left, holds the gilded grill. Photo by Philin Phlash, click here to see more images from Moonshine's Rib-a-Que | Speaking of flossing, while Phlash was covering the Rib-a Que, we were across town popping in at the Two Year Anniversary Party for Children's Dentistry of Bucktown.
Dr. Melissa, DDS, will be included in the Celebrate! magazine directory.
At just $25 to be listed in 30,000 copies, plus an e-link in every pipeline, Celebrate! Wicker Park Bucktown Holiday 2011, a printed magazine co-produced in partnership with Our Urban Times, is the sweetest deal in town!

Unlike our summer edition, all listings will be categorized and all display advertisers will be included in the listings. To ensure that we can print feature length stories written by our team, we are partnering with businesses whose missions are aligned with the magazine's content, which we are keeping a surprise, along with the cover art, to be determined through a free contest, open to all.
|
If you look closely, you can see street lights inside of caffe streets- now we know a possible meaning behind the name. Thank you to Darko of caffe streets for participating in Celebrate!
| Isaac Bashevis Singer observed, "A story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because that is how life is - full of surprises."
We want to be surprised by Celebrate! too. So, take the first step and surprise us by reaching out via email, subject header, "Celebrate," and become part of the next edition which will already be much better because you will be part of it! The contest for Cover Art ends Oct. 25. The camera-ready advertising deadline is Nov. 4, 2011.
Thank You for Reading,
Your Pipeline Team

We are having a blast creating custom ads like this one, featuring Domenico and Lucia. Call 773-960-3997 if you'd like to be part of the people-inspired Celebrate! magazine

P.S. Many thanks to Dov of American Apparel, Danny and Danny of D+D Liquors, Ulysses of Flash Taco, Felipe of Delish Diner & Bakery, and Picante, Domenico and Lucia of Lucia's, Carlos and Ellen of Vintage Underground, Joe of West on North, Joe of Sacco Bruno, Stefan of Buzz Killer Espresso, Darko of Caffe Streets, Bash of Ash's Wicker Park Tobacconist, Tina and Andy and Shayla of Asia Nails, Sue of Nail Boutique, Lou of North Coast Video, and Brian and Joe of Odd Obsession Movies for joining Celebrate!
| Map Room bartender Dave gives us a dubious look after we claim to be writing about Halloween while sitting alone in the corner of the bar hunched over a Mac laptop (on the eve of Steve Jobs's passing) nursing Allagash pale ale on an empty stomach (until the Tamale Guy popped by!!!) during a record session of morning-day-night wi-fi squatting. Dave, in case you're curious, claims to wear his pumpkin T-shirt "all year round." Nice. | Over the next four weeks of participation and production, we look forward to making Celebrate! that rare and free printed edition worth keeping around, which, in an age of tablets and bright screens, is quite a challenge. We either have a lot of nerve and guts to say that, or are confidant that amazing things can happen when hundreds of like-minded people who are connected virtually band together to be featured on the same printed page (s) beginning Nov. 22, 2011.
The message of the printed edition is Celebrate! and the theme is holidays in Wicker Park and Bucktown. Let's show our neighborhood and north side residents, where an additional 15,000 copies of Celebrate! will be distributed, why 'the streets of Wicker Park' are awesome and worth visiting and dancing in, just like the song. |
RETAIL SPACES is sponsored by Eva Bergant @properties Realtor.
| A 3-bedroom, 2 bath, and 2-parking spot 4th floor condo in the 1900 block of North Damen sold for $400,000 this past week; click here for more closings |
Decisions, decisions, decisions... With so many properties to choose from in the current buyer's market, how do you decide on which property is the right fit for you?! There were a lot of decisions made in Wicker Park and Bucktown this past week! Nine properties found new buyers. Of the mix, four were detached single family houses and five were attached condos. Two of the sold properties were considered short sales, and two were foreclosures. For more information on short sales, check out my column from January 24, 2011 where I discussed the difference between a short sale and a foreclosure. Get the full rundown of the week's closings HERE.
Eva Bergant is a Bucktown resident and local Realtor with a community driven style. In addition to being president of the Bucktown Community Organization (BCO), Eva has long served as chair of the Bucktown Garden Walk.
Do you have a real estate topic that you'd like explored in a future column? You can reach Eva by email, or 312-543-6819. |
Ask An Artist: Tom Robinson on Chicago Artists Month
|
There are five Chicago Artist Month openings this Friday night that are on my radar. So, take an artist's orders rather than a doctor's, and walk around and see a lot of art and heal your soul on this crisp fall October weekend!
Begin at Iwona Biedermann's DreamBox Gallery, which offers fashion driven objects and art created by herself, Ewa Block, April Roy and Tom Robinson. "Attitudes" opens 6-10 pm, 2415 W. North Ave. Layne Jackson is managing a large artists' space that will preview over 20 artists. SPACE DIVISION "Open Studio Nite" lasts from 6-9 PM. Don't miss Janet Jaffke's "Birds," 1827-1825 W. Division (above L. Miller & Son's Lumber). Read/SEE more. | An evening walk resulted in a sneak peek into the window of the former Midwest Bank Building at Milw/Damen/North, soon to become a Super Walgreen's/ photo by Alisa Hauser |

Having trouble adjusting to the cooler days and admitting that summer is really over? If so, take some advice from Cat & Mouse Game Store and go fly a kite! We also recommend planting bulbs, playing lots of games, and eating as much apple pie as possible. Enjoy the Fall! |

Community News is Sponsored by Jackson Junge Gallery & Framing 1389 N. Milw. p: 773-227-7900 Monday-Sat 11AM-8PM; Sun. Noon-5PM. Read the latest news from j2!
| If you have no plans for Yom Kippur this Friday evening, consider celebrating a 'Holy-Art-Night' surrounded by fine art from a curated selection of 53 artists, each using the earthly elemental forces of earth, wind, fire, and water as their guide and inspiration.
The result is a carefully arranged layout on the northeast wall of Wicker Park's Jackson Gallery, which mimics the Periodic Table of elements. Read more.
The 7th Annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest is fast approaching (Sun. Oct 16)! The all volunteer run event requires help from you to make it a success. Please look over the openings to see if there's an area in which you can lend a hand.
, your feedback is needed in terms of observing trash and recycling collection now that a private company, Waste Management, is collecting recycling bins south of Diversey in the First Ward.
The latest edition (Oct. 1) of Holstein Happenings from Friends of Holstein Park can be read here.
Over 200 Bucktown, Logan Square and Humboldt Park residents packed the McCormick Tribune YMCA gymnasium last Tuesday evening to share ideas and concerns about the upcoming Bloomingdale Trail project. Armed with post-it notes and pens, residents stuck their wishes and wants onto a huge satellite imagery map of the 3-mile area, sprawling an entire wall of the gymnasium with things like "add a fountain here" or "please think of our security." Thinking of ideas for Halloween costumes? Keep thinking! The annual Boo-Palooza is being planned for Sat. Oct. 29, 10AM-3PM in Wicker Park. Check out the day's events. Note: The Pipeline, after skipping last year's event in favor of dashing off to Alaska on a whim, has no plans of going anywhere this Halloween and will again be snapping free photos of young tykes in costumes... Truly the highlight of our fall! If anyone wishes to donate Polaroid film for our camera, to provide a complimentary take away memento for those we photograph, let us know. Film (the last time we priced it) is approx. $12 for 10 exposures and we'd love to purchase at least 10 rolls. In a previous Boo-Palooza we had five or six Polaroid rolls and ran out of film within the first 45 minutes! If you are a business who donates the film, we will of course thank you profusely and link to you in our Boo-Palooza coverage, too. Thanks!
Though summer seems a long way off, a Bucktown resident would like to get the plans set in motion for a Block Party, in the event any of her neighbors residing on Wabansia, between Leavitt, and Western, about a four block stretch, would be interested in working with the city to close off a small side street for an afternoon. Send an email if you are interested in putting together a fun neighborly bash with a bouncy house (we're just guessing), hot dogs, potluck, music, water guns, and more. Naturally, The Pipeline will report on the event, too! Both the Miss Wicker Park Pageant and the Bucktown Apple Pie Contest (SUN. OCT 16) are fast approaching! Read all about Bucktown Apple Pie Contest Registration Details and Sponsorship Opportunities HERE. Check out volunteer assignments, too. Read the latest SSA/Chamber news (Oct. 5), which is chock full of lots of local news and happenings, HERE. In a twist of irony, or perhaps just a coincidence, in the same week in which new garbage cans- as a result of a First Ward pilot program with a privately held Chicago company, Free Green Can, appeared on the streets, paid for not by taxpayers but through advertising on the cans, a blow was hit to small business owners who advertise on the sidewalks, albeit through the means of sandwich board signs, for which it's now possible to receive a $500 fine. Read more about the penalty fine. Read more about Free Green Can in this Chicago Journal story by Ian Fullerton. |
Joe Eats: Lucia's
|
|
Many thanks to Domenic and Lucia for being part of the upcoming Celebrate! magazine. Cheers to almost 10 years in the neighborhood this spring for Lucia's!
|
I'd long wanted to try Lucia's Deli and Restaurant after passing their tempting window display of Italian culinary goodies, so, on this rainy fall morning, I finally made my way over to this cozy eatery which houses a deli in front and a gourmet restaurant in back. Unfortunately, the fine dining portion doesn't open until dinner, but the deli offers a wide variety of subs, soups, salads, and a daily pasta offering. After settling on a 9" meatball sandwich, I took a seat at one of the roughly half dozen tables in the deli area. My appetite growing, I looked around the homey environment and studied the stock photos of Italy and the small shelf of sauces standing next to the deli counter. Then the sandwich arrived. Hungry for warm lemon and rice soup on a cold fall day? We are not just fans of George's Hot Dog's Avgolemono soup, but consumers of it, too. Our lunch yesterday looked like this and cost less than $5 with soda to boot. Tasty and nicely-priced... Just do it!
A new home construction along the Bloomingdale Trail, at Honore and Bloomingdale, carries some unique history, as, per longtime local Teddy Varndell, the space was once home to the Get Me High Lounge. Teddy noticed a photo of the home that we posted on Facebook, right, and commented, "The building was home to K-town Butchie's "Get Me High" jazz lounge in the early/mid 80's. (Ask some old hipsters.) It, and it's upstairs afterhours joint, was quite the place."
In other historical local news, Bucktown's Floyd's Pub might receive landmark status and subsequent tax breaks for its ties to Schlitz, per this story, posted on our site with permission from the Inside Booster newspaper, where the story initially appeared.
Crystal Cleaners, which relocated to 1673 N. Milw. after being housed in the retail space beneath the Damen el stop occupied by Greener Cleaners, is now unfortunately closed for business, per this sign posted to its window. Customers wishing to pick up their dry cleaning can find it at Northwood Cleaners, 1605 N. Wood, at the northeast corner of North and Wood, next to Gallery Cafe. Back in 2009, we reported on the closing of "Always Open," a beloved convenient mart at 1704 N. Milw, which included a Subway in back of the mart. Now it appears as if at long last, the space formerly occupied by Always Open will house a new tenant, namely a packaged goods liquor store called Evolution Wine & Spirits, which posted a permit and is hoping to open soon, per a source.
The short-lived Chikuran Sushi restaurant in the Cellar Rat Wine complex on North Ave. appears to have either a new name, management, or both, we're not sure, but the sign reads Thee.
C. Dahlstedt, a new Division street boutique, plans to offer custom suits by Thanksgiving, per this Chicago magazine story, Across town, Brock Willsey, a Michigan native, self-taught clothing designer, and Bucktown resident, is gearing up to open his first flagship store, vividbraille, a studio boutique at 2064 N. Damen featuring small batch, hand crafted and sewn in Chicago clothing by Brock and other emerging indie designers. Read more.
Doc Martens is moving into the former Earwax Cafe space. We heard the news directly from building owner, Cindy. So, no, for those who wondered, it's not a rumor...
Looking for a job? Do you speak Spanish and English? A wig shop at 1254 N. Milw. is hiring, per its sign, pictured.
Avocado Cafe, 19N. Milw, is now closed. New Einsteins Academy, 1858 N. Damen, a new preschool, is hoping to open soon.
The closed and boarded Geisha Sushi space at 1265 N. Milw. is undergoing a remodeling and will soon be a Tozi Korean BBQ Restaurant, per a construction worker we interviewed a few weeks back.
First it was the Let's Go Diner, then Wolf's Den, which we featured in a past pipeline, and finally Nori Sushi! Nori means seawood in Japanese. It will be the third location for the chain, opening soon, next to Jackson Junge, at 1393 N. Milw.
Got a space we should explore, or a space you are curious about? Let us know.
