Join us as we spend the morning exploring two beautiful spots in the Angeles National Forest. Located in the San Gabriel Mountains and covering over 1000 square miles, the ANF harbors a variety of rich wildlife habitats. Our first stop will be the Chilao Visitor Center.  Located at 5300 feet and nestled in Montane forest, this spot offers great opportunities for mid-elevation mountain birding.  Although elusive, Mountain Quail are sometimes seen here.  Next, we will drive a short distance to Charlton Flat Picnic area which is a mix of Montane Forest, Chaparral and Oak Woodland.  White-headed Woodpecker (pictured here), Mountain Chickadee and Pygmy Nuthatch are just few species we expect to see and we have a good chance for finding Western Tanager.  After birding, we will enjoy a picnic lunch under the Sugar Pines in Charlton Flats.

Our meeting point will be at the base of the mountain near Angeles Crest Highway (2) just north of the 210 Freeway in La Ca�ada.  To reduce our carbon footprint, carpooling is a great option and we will consolidate cars here.  Please let us know if you're available to drive or would like to carpool with someone else.  From this point, it will take us about 35 minutes to reach our first stop. For those driving, an Adventure Pass is needed to park in the mountains.  They cost $5.00 for the day and can be found at any sporting goods store.  If you can't find one let us know.

Although not strenuous, while looking for birds we will be negotiating uneven dirt paths and roads.  

Be sure to bring binoculars, plenty of water, lunch, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, jacket (it can be chilly in the morning) and if driving, an Adventure Pass.
