6th graders are at Wolf Ridge this week, and I Love to Read month kicks off today - lots of fun tied into the Winter Olympics. February is also School Board Appreciation month which we'll celebrate at the February 8th board meeting. Book Fairs and Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up at the elementary - and schedule changes include an early dismissal day (2/15) and a day off for ELEMENTARY ONLY (2/16) to accommodate conferences. Everyone is off of school on February 19th for Presidents Day. Both February 16th and 19th have Kids Club Adventure Days available for student K-5 at all three elementary buildings.

District Spelling Bee Grades 5 through 8:
Some New Faces and Some Veterans

Tim McCullough (2nd place)     Mark Palmquist (3rd place)     Sophia Shuga (1st place)

This year's District Spelling Bee was last week - delayed because of a snow day, but another exciting evening for our best and brightest  orthographers. There were 35 students who qualified for the Bee in grades 5 through 8. The Bee went into double digit rounds with the last three spellers finishing up with some pretty tough words. Sophia Shuga (who placed  second at last year's bee) finished in first place after getting the only correct word in a round with her word Kilimanjaro. In order to win, Sophia had to get one more word correct... ichthyosaurus - and she did! The pictures don't quite show the thrill of victory and agony of defeat - for that you would need to have sound. District winners move on to the regional meet in Sartell on February 5, 2018.

2nd Annual Music Extravaganza Concert

Although the set up was a little bit different this year, the Music Extravaganza was a rousing success for the second year in a row! Each of the bands and choirs - from 8th grade through the specialized bands and choirs in the high school - performed individually and then performed a piece as an ensemble. The night ended with a audience-participation performance of the school song. If you have the time, you can catch the whole performance.

ExCEL  - Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership - is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who work voluntarily in their community. Hannah Gillach is our Wildcat winner of the award.

The Minnesota State High School League sponsors the AAA award for a senior girl and a senior boy who excel in A cademics (3.0 GPA or better), A thletics (at least one MSHSL-sponsored athletic activity) and A rts (MSHSL-sponsored debate, one-act play, speech, visual arts, and instrumental or vocal music). Each Administrative Region 7AA member school may nominate one senior girl and one senior boy to the region level review and evaluation. The Region Committee then selects one girl and one boy as the Region winners who will advance to enter the state competition.
Rachel Erickson and Henry Trost are our Chisago Lakes AAA award winners.

Additionally , Henry Trost is the Region 7AA award winner and will move on to the state competition. The Minnesota State High School League will announce the winners, one boy and one girl from both a Class "A" and a Class "AA" school, in conjunction with the Boys State Basketball Tournament in March.

Donated Smart Phones for Google Expeditions

Chisago Lakes  would like to build a class set for our students to use for Google Expeditions. The greatest expense in putting together the needed equipment is the device. What we need is to collect some of those unused smart phones you might have - particularly after the holidays if Santa had you on the nice list and upgraded your device.
We're looking for your iPhone (5 or newer) or Android smartphone - unlocked and wiped of any personal information. All iCloud backup usernames and passwords, along with passcodes to open the phone need to be removed to be donated. If you have questions on how to do this, please contact Mike Klun at 651-213-2015 or by email. You can drop phones off at the district office or any of the school buildings.
