IPLP Class of 2017 Recognized for Community Service and Advocacy
|
The Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP) Program at the James E. Rogers College of Law thanks the families and friends of this year's graduates for supporting them during their journey through law school.
A special thanks goes to this year's graduates for all their work to advance IPLP's mission to increase the representation of American Indian, Alaska Native, and indigenous advocates within the practice of law.
This year IPLP established the Robert A. Hershey IPLP Outstanding Tribal Advocate Award in recognition of
Professor Hershey's contributions to the IPLP Program, his service to the Native American community in Tucson and across Indian country, and his dedication to mentoring and supporting students.
The inaugural winner of the award was
Alexandra Mojado (above, center), a direct descendant of the Pala Band of Mission Indians and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.
As a student in IPLP's clinical programs, Alexandra advocated for her own tribal community by being the lead on a U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief filed by IPLP's
Tribal Justice Clinic. She also passed the Yaqui Bar exam and represented indigent Yaqui clients in court, spent one summer at an NGO on behalf of indigenous women who are victims of sexual and domestic violence, and worked at the Tohono O'odham Attorney General's office.
Alexandra plans to work as a tribal court public defender. Congratulations to Alexandra, who also passed the February Arizona Bar exam!
Anna Hohag (Bishop Paiute Tribe, above, left) received the Rose Davis Public Service Award from the James E. Rogers College of Law.
As president of the University of Arizona Native American Law Students Association (NALSA) and the Area 1 representative for National NALSA, Anna worked tirelessly to create an inclusive community at the law school and mentored countless youth. Anna was also selected for the University of Arizona Native American Student Affairs Outstanding Graduate Service Award in recognition of her service to Native youth at the University of Arizona.

The graduating members of

gathered on the steps of Old Main for one last photo together.
ALR held its year-end banquet at Hacienda Del Sol on April 21 in celebration of its 59th year providing academic and professional growth opportunities for its members.
Keynote speaker Mi-Ai Parrish addressed the audience on the theme of the night, "The Courage to Stand Up," and Vice Chief Justice John Pelander helped the Review honor Tim Berg ('75) as a distinguished alumni.

The
Arizona Journal of International & Comparative Law held its year-end event on April 28th at Casa Vicente. Outgoing editor-in-chief Esther Sanchez-Gomez tells us that it was a relatively informal affair with a lot of eating, drinking, and conversation as well as awards to recognize exceptional 3Ls and great 2L notes.

 Congratulations to Benjamin Taylor ('04)
A few weeks ago we let you know that 2004 Arizona Law alumnus Benjamin Taylor was running for the State Bar of Arizona Board of Governors.
The results are in, and Ben won a seat, earning the highest number of votes in District 6. Congratulations!

Newest Wildcat
It is always a great pleasure to welcome a new Wildcat. And our newest added a little extra anticipation to our convocation ceremony this year.
2017 graduate Derek Abeyta
and his wife Amber were expecting their daughter on graduation day (May 13).
Perhaps to Derek and Amber's relief, our newest community member waited ... until three days later. But she was already a presence at our convocation.
Derek says:
"Introducing Jesslyn Jean Abeyta!! Born on May 16th, 2017 at 5:34 pm, weighing in at 8 lbs 3 oz and 20.5 in long. Mom and daughter are doing great! I love them both so incredibly much and am simply overjoyed to be baby J's daddy. We are truly blessed!"

Students are gone. Summer has come. The ranks of Arizona Law graduates -- and now future graduates! -- have grown.
So much of what we do, and especially the critical support for students, comes from you. It is, again, a great time to give in favor of students -- in favor of dreams realized.
