The Conversations with Bob Mundheim series brings the highest level of discourse about corporate governance to the College of Law each spring.
The five-part series features Professor of Corporate Law and Finance
Bob Mundheim moderating discussions with national leaders in business and law about corporate governance, markets, ethics, and career development.
The Conversations are open to the larger community. Faculty and students from the UA
Eller College of Management
also attend, and graduate business students in finance, management, and other fields are invited join the full short course in corporate governance of which the Conversations are just a part.
Please join me in welcoming each of the speakers to campus this spring and, if you would like, take a seat at the table at the College of Law for any of these discussions.
We also have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the lifetime achievements of our colleague and alumnus Professor Barbara Atwood ('76) who will be honored by the Foundation for Family Justice on Friday of this week. (Register to attend.)

The popular annual series, Conversations with Bob Mundheim, kicked off its 2017 season last week with a visit from
Michele Coleman Mayes, Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary for the New York Public Library. You can read a
synopsis of her remarks here, touching on leadership and diversity in the legal profession.
Mayes noted that building meaningful relationships with those she's worked with has been critical to her success throughout her career.
"
People who are most unlike you are the ones you learn the most from
," she said.
Mayes previously served as executive vice president and general counsel for Allstate Insurance Company. She served as a senior vice president and general counsel of Pitney Bowes Inc. and in several legal capacities at Colgate-Palmolive. She also held leading roles with Burroughs Corporation and Unisys Corporation. Mayes also served in the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, eventually assuming the role of Chief of the Civil Division in Detroit. She currently chairs the ABA's Commission on Women in the Profession.

This week we were joined by
Mary Jo White, former Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (2013-2017).
White was the first woman to be United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1993-2002). In this role, she led several high-profile prosecutions. For 10 years, she headed the litigation department at Debevoise & Plimpton, and she has now returned to the firm. (

On April 3, we will hear from
Peter Tague, Vice Chairman and Global Co-Head of Citi's Mergers & Acquisitions Department.
In his current role, Tague is focused on Citi's international clients and transactions. In his prior role, he was responsible for strategy execution within Global Banking and held positions including Global Co-Head of the Energy, Power and Chemicals Coverage Group, and Head of the European Mergers and Acquisitions Group. John J. Cannon III, Partner, Shearman & Sterling.
Cannon is a senior member of the Executive Compensation & Employee Benefits Group and co-chair of Shearman & Sterling's Corporate Governance Advisory Group.
In his practice, he focuses on all aspects of compensation and benefits, including ERISA and corporate, securities, bankruptcy, employment, and tax laws. (See full bio.)

Simon M. Lorne, Vice Chairman and Chief Legal Officer at Millennium Management, LLC.
Lorne oversees Millennium Management's compliance, legal, regulatory, and internal audit functions. Previously, Lorne served as a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson, a managing director at Salomon Brothers, and general counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He is an independent director of Teledyne Technologies Inc. and co-chairs the Stanford Directors' College. (

Professor Atwood to be Honored by the Foundation for Family Justice
|
 As we announced in January, the Foundation for Family Justice will present Arizona Law Professor Barbara Atwood ('76) with the Peter Economidis Award for Lifetime Achievement and Contribution to Family Law this Friday, March 31, 2017, beginning at 5 p.m.
The award ceremony will take place at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, along with a silent auction and buffet. Proceeds benefit Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc.
Barbara is the Mary Anne Richey Professor Emerita of Law and directs the Family and Juvenile Law Certificate Program. She has long been -- and remains -- an extremely popular and effective teacher.
Her scholarship explores topics at the intersection of civil procedure and family law, with a particular focus on issues of voice and representation for marginalized groups. She has spoken at national and international conferences on child representation, child's voice, the Indian Child Welfare Act, and private ordering in family law.
Of the award, Barbara says,
"I'm truly honored to be in the company of Peter Economidis, Jim Stroud, and Len Karp --all great lawyers who have done so much for our community. The beneficiary of this event, of course, is Southern Arizona Legal Aid. As we all know, they need financial support more than ever."

 Arizona Law has renamed our beloved Gutter Bowl event, now celebrating its 10th year, as the Steve Hirsch Gutter Bowl, in honor of the late Steven A. Hirsch ('80), a devoted alumnus and one of Gutter Bowl's biggest fans.
All proceeds from the Hirsch Bowl will go to the Steven A. Hirsch Scholarship Fund.

Pro Bono Patent Law Clinic Launch
We celebrated the launch of our IP & Entrepreneurship Clinic's designation as a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) pro bono clinic last Thursday evening with great verve, and 100 attendees.

William Covey, Deputy General Counsel and Director for the Office of Enrollment and Discipline (OED), and Grant Corboy, Patent Pro Bono Program Administrator.
