This past year Arizona Law lost a luminary. Steven Hirsch ('80) touched nearly every part of the legal profession as an advocate, a committed leader, and a fierce Wildcat!
Today we are renaming the Gutter Bowl, an alumni tradition near and dear to our college, in memory of Steve, who so often took a leading role in this event and in the many other ways that he served the college. I hope you will help us honor our beloved friend by getting out on the lanes on April 18.

Arizona Law Gutter Bowl Renamed in Memory of Steve Hirsch ('80)
|
"Never bowl without first hitting up the snack bar."
A signature University of Arizona Law tradition is being renamed in honor of a devoted alumnus who was its biggest fan and who spent his career giving back to the legal community.
Gutter Bowl, Arizona Law's annual bowling tournament, will now be known as the Steve Hirsch Gutter Bowl in memory of Steven A. Hirsch ('80). All proceeds from the Hirsch Bowl will go to the Steven A. Hirsch Scholarship Fund.
Hirsch attended nearly every Gutter Bowl since its creation 10 years ago. In 2015, he served as a Gutter Bowl King Pin with longtime friend Chas Wirken ('75). He encouraged firm-to-firm and alumni class-to-class challenges, booing reckless throws, and defending your First Amendment right to brag.
Wirken says:
"The Gutter Bowl is a metaphor for Steve Hirsch: fun competition.
That describes Steve. He was competitive in everything he did, whether in court or in sports. And he always had fun. So, I hope everyone will join me in honoring Steve while having fun."
Hirsch was an attorney at Quarles & Brady, where he practiced general business, utility, and commercial litigation. Before that he worked for many years at Bryan Cave with his close friend and fellow alumnus Lars Lagerman ('78). He maintained a pronounced presence in the State Bar of Arizona as second vice president and a leader of several boards and committees.
He was a double Wildcat, earning both his BA ('77) and JD at the University of Arizona. He was also president of the Law College Association (LCA) from 1999 to 2000 and served as a director for more than two decades. He received the college's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2000 and the LCA's Sidney S. Woods Alumni Service Award in 2003.

National Appellate Advocacy Team Meets With Success

Warm congratulations go to students Margo Casselman ('17), Bernardo Velasco ('17), and Janet Howe ('17), members of the Arizona Law National Appellate Advocacy Competition team that made it to the semifinal round of the Boston Regional. The ABA's National Appellate Advocacy Competition is one of the most prestigious and competitive interscholastic legal skills competitions in the country.
Professor Susie Salmon reports:
"Seeded #16 going into semifinals, the team narrowly (by 4 points out of 600) missed taking out the #1 seed. And, despite what the competition administrator characterized as one of the most competitive fields she had ever seen, Margo Casselman won #1 oral advocate in the region and Bern Velasco won #3 advocate in the region! What a performance!"
Congratulations also go to the second Arizona Law team of Troy Anderson ('17), Matthew Hoxsie ('17), and Audrey Roberts ('17). Susie says that team also argued brilliantly in three rounds of competition.
Both teams put in several months of hard work. They
enjoyed excellent preparation and advice from Arizona Law faculty members.
Several alumni also served as practice judges, including 2011 NAAC team alums (and Class of 2011 grads) Katie Callahan, Naomi Claxton, Nick Knauer, Lauren LaBuff, and Ryan Thomsen; 2013 NAAC team alum Johnny Anderson ('13); 2014 NAAC team alums (and Class of 2014 grads) Kristine (Alger) Doubleday, Hope (Sullivan) Bielat, and Will Pew; 2015 NAAC team alum Jayme Weber ('15); and 2016 NAAC team alum James Carlson ('16).

Former Law Scholars Run in Honor of Tillman
A group of Arizona Law students and alumni, all veterans, ran in the Ragnar del Sol road relay last Friday as part of a team honoring the Pat Tillman Foundation. It's their way of giving back to the program that has helped support their education. The team members, including Tillman Scholars from Arizona Law, Michael Mohler ('17), Wes Stiner ('17), Matt Randle ('14), and Joshua Sparling ('17), were featured in local news coverage for their effort (

The Arizona Public Patent Program is a statewide program offered by the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law
IP & Entrepreneurship Clinic, with the assistance of the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO).
The program is designed to help financially under-resourced independent inventors, small businesses and startup companies obtain free legal counsel from local patent attorneys in filing patent applications and protecting their innovations. Local innovation strengthens our local economy, and this program helps to ensure that Arizona's inventors have the legal protections they need to thrive.
Invited, but not yet confirmed, are representatives from our state and federal government, representatives from the USPTO, investors, inventors, and leaders from the legal and startup communities.
The launch is especially geared toward inventors, patent attorneys, and students of IP law.
This event is open to the public, and there is no cost to attend.
