Greetings,
Last week the college hosted one of the largest Board of Visitors meetings in recent memory.
The annual Board of Visitors meeting brings leaders from all dimensions of legal practice. The board includes both alumni and friends trained at other law schools (yes, we know that some fine legal education takes place at other law schools).
We discuss critical innovations at the college, board members meet, interview, and advise students, and especially the newest members of our community, and they counsel the college on emerging trends in practice.
In addition to the Board of Visitors, you will see that as we enter the heart of the Spring term, our schedule is chock-a-block with lectures, workshops, forums, and other events.
Let me highlight the variety of activities and enrichment events organization by the Arizona Law Black Law Students Association for students and alumni in celebration of Black History Month -- see the full schedule below.

Board of Visitors Convenes at the College
|
Our Board of Visitors meeting represents every facet of the legal profession -- from managing partners to sole practitioners and judges to business leaders. In total, 45 of the most influential leaders in the profession joined us from around the state and around the country.
During the day-long gathering we presented an overview of the college with a focus on Arizona Law's programs and initiatives that are leading the nation.
At the suggestion of members of the Board of Visitors in prior years, this year's meeting schedule included more time with students. Board of Visitors members assisted our students in the college's mock interview program, which offers an opportunity to practice interviewing skills and get feedback from leaders in the profession.
The experience and advice could not be better timed. Over the next three weeks students will be interviewing with private and public employers.
Each year, the meeting also coincides with the annual First-Year Lunch, allowing any first-year student (1L, transfer, MLS, LLM, SJD -- anyone spending their first year on campus) to share a meal with the Board of Visitors. The lunch was hosted by Student Bar Association president Jillian Andrews ('17),
and included a short talk on deep changes in privacy law by Professor Jane Bambauer
.

The board completed the day with a session on marketplace dynamics, moderated by Amelia Craig Cramer and Nicole Stanton ('00), addressing practice areas and resources that are showing signs of shifting demand.

Richard Grand Legal Writing Competition Results
|
The final award ceremony for the 17th Annual Richard Grand Legal Writing Competition was held on Thursday, Jan. 26. Professors Lorraine Gin ('99), Suzanne Rabe ('79), and Susie Salmon guided the competition.
We are most grateful to Marcia Grand for continuing to inspire and fund the Richard Grand Legal Writing Competition in honor of her late husband Richard Grand ('58). Congratulations to:
Joe Austin (LLM) -- first place ($2,500 award)
Christina Rinnert (1L) -- second place ($1,500 award)
Jillian Andrews (3L) -- third place ($1,000 award)

These finalists were selected from 41 entries.
Lorraine Gin explained that, this year, the faculty team that does the initial screening was particularly impressed by the high quality of the submissions. Selecting the four finalists was unusually difficult, and they warmly commend all who wrote.

Black History Month Events
The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at Arizona Law has an active calendar this month in recognition of Black History Month. BLSA began the month with a "Peace and Paint" session in the College of Law lobby on Feb. 2, and h
osted a two-part screening of the documentary 13th on Feb. 6 and 7.

Law Women's Association Seeking Items for Mar. 2 Auction
The UA Law Women's Association (LWA) needs your help with donations for its annual fundraising auction, to be held Mar. 2. Students bid on experiences with law school faculty, and this year LWA would like to offer experiences with legal professionals as well -- helping acquaint students with the Tucson legal community, and you with them. Your donation will help fund LWA activities for next year, including the welcome dinner for 1L students and speaker events. Your donation can be as simple as taking two students out to coffee and giving them a tour of your office, or as large as bowling with your office. If you would like to participate, or need suggestions, please email Sara Wright ('18).
