DUKE SCHOLARS
2016 SAS Duke University Scholars State and Grand Scholars.
Duke Scholars are 7th grade students who score 95% or higher on certain subtests of a standard achievement test (Iowa basic). These students are then able to take the SAT or ACT college entrance test as 7th graders. This is the 25th year we have participated in this program.  SAS is proud to say 43% of our current 7th Grade students are Duke Scholars.

After taking the SAT or ACT, 72% of our SAS Duke scholars scored better than college bound Juniors and Seniors.

The state honored students are: Noah Alvarez, Colin Bryant, Casey Burkham, Zachary Cawyer, Kate Collard, Oliver Cristobal, Colin Fredian, Harley Glenn, Lane Harrison, Annabelle Hough, Jackson Kaiser, Zachary Milton, Mathieu Reyes, Irene Richmond, Annabelle Sauer, Tanner Smith, Elizabeth Walters, and CJ Woodard. All of these students will be honored at TCU in May.

Two of our students scored well enough to be Grand Duke Scholars; which means they scored in the 1% of all the students taking the test. These students are: Oliver Cristobal and Zachary Milton.

MEALS FOR FAMILIES IN NEED
Would you love another way to give back to this wonderful community?  Are you looking for an easy volunteer opportunity that only takes a few minutes from home?  Meals for Families in Need is a special ministry at Saint Andrew that helps organize meals for school families when they are in a troubling time.

We are seeking an individual to be the liaison between the school and the families and to set up an online calendar for the meal deliveries.  If you feel called to this ministry or have any questions, please contact Deb Boehmler at  [email protected].
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Karla Espinoza for being named a State winner in the Knights of Columbus Religious Freedom Essay Contest.

ROBOTICS TEAM NEWS
The 2016-2017 season for the Saint Andrew Catholic School Robotics Team begins in August!

Attention all current 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade parents and students ...
The Saint Andrew Catholic School Robotics Team (the "RoboCats") will begin its third FIRST LEGO LEAGUE season in August 2016. Here are the details:

Robotics Team Contracts
  • "RoboContracts" will be available to grades 5 - 8 in mid-to-late-August 2016. The cost per student will be $60.
  • Along with the contract, students wanting to join the robotics team must provide the following in order to be considered:
Short essay explaining why they want to be on the team.

Written nomination from one of their teachers from the previous school year.
Team Meetings

Team meetings will begin in late August/early September 2016. Each team's coach will establish a meeting schedule. Meetings are typically twice per week, 1 to 2 hours each time. (The individual team coaches will contact team members and their parents regarding the specific meetings days and times.) Our goal is to have teams of 6 to 10 members.

The Challenge
  • The FIRST LEGO LEAGUE "Global Challenge" will be released in August, 2016. This will define what teams will be trying to build, program, research, present, and solve.
  • The qualifying tournament is expected to be in December at a local school. We will know more about that later in the Fall 2016 semester. Qualified teams may advance to the next round in January/February/March, 2017.
Nolan Catholic Robotics Camp

Nolan is having a summer robotics camp from June 13-17. This would be a great way to get started for newcomers or to gain more experience for those who have already been RoboCats. Click here to sign-up.
