EARLY DISMISSAL - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH
News for the Parents of Saint Andrew Catholic School
SEPTEMBER 6, 2016
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,

Last Friday, I had the honor and pleasure of attending the first Moms' meeting studying the book,  Divine Mercy for Moms by Faehnle and Jaminet. This great group of Moms, led by Summer Riney and Deb Boehmler, focused on the message that, as parents, we are all constant distributers of mercy. The group meets again after drop-off this Friday. If interested in joining, please see information below.

History in our church was made this Labor Day Weekend in the exciting announcement by Pope Francis on Sunday that Mother Teresa is now Saint Teresa! What a wonderful example of love and mercy in this foundress of the Missionaries of Charity. May she be an example to all of us.
" Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." - Saint Teresa

UNIFORM REMINDERS

Mass Uniform Reminders for Kindergarten - 3rd Grades
There has been some confusion regarding Mass/field trip uniforms for Kindergarten - 3rd grades. Please read the below for clarification...

Boys (K-3rd grade) need to wear a new red knit polo shirt with the shield. Boys may wear the navy shorts or pants.

Girls (K-3rd grade) need to wear the new white polo shirt with the shield. This is worn with the jumper. (This may be the new jumper or the grandfathered jumper from previous years.)

The other four days of the week, K-3rd grade boys may wear the grandfathered blue knit polo shirt with SAS on collar and K-3rd grade girls may wear the grandfathered  white button front 'Miss Tulane' shirt, the white Peter Pan collar shirt or the white oxford.

We hope this clears things up. We will make every effort to make this more clear in our next handbook revision. We recognize the confusion and will give any families extra time to get the required shirts. Also, we are aware that some of the red polos are on backorder and they will not be in for a few weeks. Thank you for your patience.

Mass Uniform Reminders for 4th - 8th Grades

Boys (4th -8th grades) must wear a white Oxford shirt with the new Saint Andrew shield tie. 4th - 8th grade boys must also wear pants to Mass (navy for 4th - 6th, khaki for 7th & 8th.)

Girls (4th - 8th grades) must wear a white Oxford shirt with a jumper (plaid jumper for 4th - 6th, navy jumper for 7th & 8th). All girls must wear white or navy knee-high socks to Mass.

Out of Uniform Dress

Students may dress out of uniform on their birthdays (or on the school day closest to the actual birthday) except for Mass days and field trip days. If your child is out of uniform for his/her birthday, please remember that the Out of Uniform guidelines must be followed as stated in the handbook with due regard for decorum and modesty. Thank you for your help in aiding your child in selecting appropriate attire for out-of-uniform days.
  • Strictly enforced guidelines regarding shorts/skirt lengths, shoes, socks, jewelry, etc. also apply to out of uniform dress.
  • Nice jeans (no baggy, saggy, ragged or torn, tight or low cut), walking shorts, jean shorts - no athletic shorts/sweat pants/leggings/ jeggings - are acceptable.
  • Shirts and blouses should look nice and neat.
  • "Flip---flops" or sandals are not to be worn to school.
  • Students do not have to wear school uniform shoes on an out of uniform day.
  • No strapless dresses allowed. Shoulders must be covered.

IOWA TESTING
IOWA  Assessment testing  for 1st through 8th grade students will take place Monday, September 12th through Friday, September 16th.  Testing  will begin in many classrooms at 8:00 a.m. A student entering the school building after this time will not be admitted into classrooms and will have to wait until the class is finished  testing , resulting in scheduling a make-up test later in the week. So, if possible please avoid scheduling appointments at this time.

LIVING THE WORD - TRADITION

The Saint Andrew courtyard is one of the highlights of a visit to our campus.  This area of the campus is a venue for many different activities.  Originally, the courtyard was asphalt and played host to the Fall Festival.  In 1985, Clarice Peninger arrived as principal of the school and could see a need to revamp the area based on the heat, how sound reverberated in the courtyard and the general look of the space. Ms. Peninger "longed for grass and trees" and a way to unite the buildings that surrounded the courtyard. That summer, a plan was put in place for the courtyard where there would be grass and trees to be donated and dedicated to deceased immediate family members of faculty.  Flats of grass were donated for the project and Peninger herself helped to lay sod in order for the area to be ready for dedication day.  It began as a courtyard full of grass and a small patio area.  The sidewalk to the back part of the campus was added later along with the first few trees.  One of the trees near the Saint Anthony wing is for the mother of Ms. Peninger.

Today, the courtyard remains the heart of the campus.  It plays host to daily classroom activities, Booknic, Pre-K "campouts" and splash days and was the scene of the school's 60th anniversary celebration.  It has become an oasis for our students, teachers, parents and our parish.

Respondents were able to add comments in each section of the survey.  A summary of topics for the comments will be listed.  Discussions are taking place administratively as well as with the faculty to address the survey results and comments.  We thank you for your responses as we seek to continually improve.  Comments for this section were related to:

* Would like to see bible study for each middle school grade - 6,7,8.
* Please teach more varied, traditional Catholic prayers (Memorare, Prayer Before a Crucifix, etc.)
* Love that you are teaching Catholic faith in a way that also lets the kids be themselves and encouraging them to explore their faith. This is versus what seemed like a judgmental approach in the past.
* We would like to see more community service opportunity at each grade level, not just upper grades. It would give us a bigger presence in the community.
* Wish there were more hands-on volunteer opportunities besides just sending in items/money provided by parents.
* Service within the church should be encouraged.
* Having the children go to OLV this year was a wonderful addition to the service curriculum. I would love to see the students interact more with the sisters.
* As a large family, it is a struggle to find and attend volunteer service for our 7th and 8th grade children each year.
* Have more priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters make more visits to the school to encourage a life of vocations and make it more real for the children.
* Teachers have an awesome responsibility not to just teach the subject matter but also be role models.  * Catholic teachings are an integral part of my son's academic learning.
* This is the area we have seen most improvement in and are most satisfied with.
* Feel there is a slight disconnect between students implementing our Faith values/practices, and their actions towards their peers.
* Even though we are not catholic I feel my child is understanding how important it is to have God and Jesus Christ in her life. You are doing an excellent job.
* We wish there was more consistent Adoration for the students.
* I wish the church and school were more united
* I am disappointed that 1st Communion is not administered through the School.
* I love the fact that my child comes home singing and praying.
