YEAR OF MERCY
Seei
ng the great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis called f
o
r th
e Year of Mercy-a special period, also known as a Holy Year or Jubilee Year, for the Catholic Church. It is a time for the Church across the world to take approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way.
Pope Francis has asked us as individuals and as a Church "to be a witness of mercy" by reflecting on and practicing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy (
Pope Francis' Announcement of the Year of Mercy). Beginning December 8, 2015, the Holy Year of Mercy will focus on studying and reflecting on mercy, receiving mercy, and being merciful towards others. (dynamiccatholic.com)
"I am confident that the whole Church, which is in such need of mercy for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God's mercy, with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Do not forget that God forgives all
, and God forgives always
. Let us never tire of asking forgiveness. Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God." - Pope Francis

UNIFORM COMMITTEE MEETING
|
There will be a Uniform Meeting on
Friday, December 11th, in the cafeteria, beginning at
8:00am. Parker Uniform representatives will be in attendance.
|
Every year, our school donates pajamas, socks, hats, gloves, underwear, fleece blankets and gently used coats to Social Ministries. Social Ministries then gives these items to families in need. Many of these families will use these items as Christmas presents for their loved ones. Please consider donating items to this cause. Just bring them to school and put them on the Advent trees in the front foyer by the morning of December 18th. Thank you for your support!

SPOTLIGHT ON: THIRD GRADE
|
THE JOY PROJECT
Third grade has a classroom mascot, Joy, the lamb. She is not just an average, ordinary, cute and cuddly class mascot; she also serves as a tool to help the students learn and become excited about service to others. Joy's name is an acronym that helps us understand where we stand in the pecking order in the performance of service; that order is: (J)esus, (O)thers, and finally (Y)ourself. She also serves as a visual reminder that Jesus, Himself, was considered the Lamb of God and that He surrendered all of His heavenly glory and majesty in order to humble Himself in service to others.
Each week, one student is assigned to take Joy home for the weekend. When Joy is with the student's
family
she is supposed to accompany the family while they perform a service project or do something charitable. They then record the experience in a journal, along with pictures.

On
Monday December 14th, students may begin wearing Christmas Holiday Wear. The students are allowed to wear holiday socks, bows, hats, headbands, jewelry, etc. No nail polish please.
As always, please use your good judgment. Nothing should be worn that could be distracting to the learning or teaching process. Teachers and administration have the final call on any potentially distracting holiday wear.
Holiday Wear is not to be worn on Wednesday, December 16th because of Mass.
On Friday, December 18th, holiday shirts, "ugly" Christmas sweaters, holiday bows, socks, hats, reindeer ears, elf ears, jewelry, etc. may be worn with uniform "bottoms" or jeans. Uniform shoes must be worn.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2015 DUKE SCHOLARS
|
|
For the 24th year Saint Andrew Catholic School is participating in The DUKE UNIVERSITY Scholar program. The largest program of its kind, participants in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search identify academic strengths, develop abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future.
Seventh grade students are eligible to participate because they have achieved a qualifying score at or above the 95th percentile on a recent grade-level standardized test.
As part of the talent search enrollment, the seventh graders are eligible to take either the ACT (no Writing) or SAT. This allows students to have greater insight into their abilities and it gives them the opportunity to preview a college entrance exam.
Duke Scholars for 2015 are:
Noah Alvarez-Grisser, Natalie Ater, Emilie Barton, Colin Bryant,
Casey Burkham, Colin Carleo, Zachary Cawyer, Catherine Collard, Oliver Cristobal, Joshua Estwick, Colin Fredian, Harley Glenn,
