ASH WEDNESDAY

Ash Wednesday begins our 40 day season of Lent.  We come together on this day to remind ourselves that we do not always follow God's ways and need to ask for His mercy and forgiveness. Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar.  The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words:   "Repent and believe in the Gospel."

The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts.

Tomorrow, we will be having a Prayer Service beginning at 2:15pm, instead of our regular 9:00am Mass.  We will distribute ashes immediately following the prayer service.  Parents are welcome to attend and are asked to sit in the choir loft.

LENT: BE FILLED WITH JOY

Lent offers us forty days for God to reveal himself.  Forty opportunities for us to draw closer to Jesus. Forty days for the Father to shower us with mercy, love and healing.  God's mercy is an urgent matter during Lent.

Pope Francis has dedicated this year as a Jubilee Year of Mercy.  He has asked us to have the same kind of mercy that Jesus had for all who came to him.  During this Year of Mercy and this Lent, may we find ways to serve the needy, welcome those we may not agree with us and be as merciful as our heavenly Father.

More than any other time, Lent is a favor from Heaven.  A season to be open to and receive God's grace-especially during this Holy Year of Mercy!

Our school Lenten theme this year is "Be filled with JOY". (Jesus Others Yourself)  The students are going to be taught about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and how we are to live them out in our daily lives.
