March 16, 2018
Dear parents,

At the administrator's conference this past week I had the opportunity to hear Colonel Jeff Williams, a retired United States Army officer and NASA astronaut, speak about his experiences on the International Space Station. How incredible to see God's creation from the perspective of space! (and we just saw the pictures!)
It was amazing to hear it took just a few hours to reach the station, traveling faster than I can comprehend. Colonel Williams grew up in northern Wisconsin and is a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas. On one of his trips to the International Space Station, he and another astronaut were both members of Gloria Dei and were able to celebrate the Lord's Supper together in space.

As he was speaking, I thought about our little ones and the amazing world God has created for them.
I thought about how God already knows the adventures our children will take and how he will be active in their lives. As I reflected further, I realized that is true for each of us at any age. God is already active in each of our lives. He already knows the great adventures of our lives and how he will be present through all of our experiences. I encourage you to take some time and reflect on how God is leading you and to experience His wondrous creation wherever you are!

May you and your family be blessed over this next week!

Family Mentor Program
Our CPAL (Christian Parent Advisory League) board is very excited to begin a new mentor program which will help connect existing families with new families at HCLS. We are seeking names of existing families that would be interested to serve as mentors for new families.

Would you be willing to...
  • Connect kids over summer (something as simple as a play date in the park)
  • Share contact information so new families can ask questions as they come up
  • Answer questions and offer guidance throughout the school year
If you would like to have your name added as a mentor family, please contact Angela Ferrel at [email protected] . We are working on creating a list of interested families before the school year ends so we can begin connecting with our new families this summer. Thank you for reaching out and welcoming others into our school family!

Piano Students Shine at Piano Festival!
This past Saturday, 38 piano students from HCL (and a few friends from area schools)  participated in the 15th annual Hales Corners Lutheran Piano Festival.
Each student  performed two pieces from memory for a qualified judge, who then provided them with  written comments and a numerical score. All of the students did a fantastic job! Piano  Festival provides these students the opportunity to "go the extra mile" in learning and  preparing difficult pieces, and making sure that every detail is evident in their performance.
Congratulations to all of our piano students for their effort, determination, and success!
Community Wellness and Substance Use Prevention Event
Recently, the opioid epidemic occurring in the U.S. was declared a national public health emergency. Drug and alcohol misuse are occurring in every community throughout the U.S.  Most of us know someone struggling with addiction and the life-shattering impact it has on the individual and their family. The Hales Corners and Greendale Health Departments have begun a joint community effort to prevent substance misuse and its devastating effects. The group initiative is called Community Alliance: Awareness and Prevention of Substance Misuse and is comprised of residents, schools, businesses, churches, and health department staff in Hales Corners and Greendale. Meetings began in August to talk about substance misuse and plan community activities to promote prevention of substance misuse and reduce stigma for those experiencing addiction.

The Community Alliance is currently planning a Community Wellness and Substance Use Prevention Event at Greendale High School on March 28 , 2018. The evening event will feature a resource fair prior to a presentation from individuals who have personal experience with addiction as well as local professionals who work in the area of addiction and treatment.  Please click here for more information and share with others who may be interested in learning more about the problem of addiction and helping us in our efforts to prevent substance misuse.
