May 11, 2018
Dear parents,

As our eighth graders were confirmed this past weekend, I am reminded of our journey in faith.
The more I learn and the more I grow, the more I realize how little I know and how much I need to grow.  Too often I think we are misled to believe that because God loves us and blesses us, our lives here on earth will be free of trouble.  In fact, our lives here on earth keep pointing to our need for God and His great love for us.

James 1:2-5 says,
" Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.   Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. "

Pure joy?  While we may feel the opposite of joy in the midst of trials, it's often as we look back that we recognize how God has been at work and carried us through the tough times.  I pray that you rest in the loving arms of your Savior, Jesus, and seek opportunities to continue to grow in faith each day and each year. May God continue to bless our children and especially our confirmands as they get ready for high school, may the Holy Spirit fill their hearts so their faith grows as they experience the joys and challenges of life.

L unch Account Balance and End of School Year

Thank you for your continued support of our lunch program. As we near the end of the school year, it is important that we balance out the accounts for eighth graders and students with negative balances. Eighth graders without younger siblings at HCLS or students not returning to HCLS for the 2018-19 school year will be issued a refund on accounts of $5.00 or more. If an eighth grader has a younger sibling returning next year, we will transfer the  remaining balance to that account.
This will automatically be done for the 2018-19 school year. Please take a moment to view your student's account at myschoolbucks.com and pay any negative balance by Friday, June 1. Lunch fees must be paid before report cards will be issued. If you have any questions, please contact Denise Toy or the school office
at 414-529-6702.
Math Placement for Current 2nd - 7th grade students

We are blessed with the opportunity to provide three math classes at each grade level starting in 3rd grade.   The teachers will begin the process of assessing student proficiency in mathematics for class placement in the next school year.
Our goal is to recognize the skills that each student has already developed in order to best fit them with the objectives and pacing of the various math classes.
After much prayer and consideration, math placement is based on the following:

  • Standardized (MAP) test scores
  • Class grades
  • Teacher, student, and parent input
  • Study habits and effort
  • Results of diagnostic tests

We value your partnership in helping your child grow to their fullest potential as God has designed.  Please use the following link before June 1 if you would like to provide additional input:  https://goo.gl/forms/Tw35xeyCbrjqTeHD3 Thank you!

Sales Tax Holiday - Parents, Think School Supplies!

In case you were not aware, Governor Walker signed a bill that created a Sales Tax Holiday that will be held August 1-5. This is separate and in addition to the $100 child tax rebate. It might be a good idea if you make parents aware of this as many items are school supplies.

Here is a list of items that are EXEMPT from sales tax from August 1-5.

More information can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Revenue web site.  (https://www.revenue.wi.gov/Pages/Individuals/SalesTaxHoliday.aspx)

Graduation Dance Refreshments - Tonight!

Seventh graders are asked to bring in a donation for the graduation dance tonight.  Please bring your donation to the dance.  All students in 7R are asked to bring either small bottles of Gatorade or fruit juice pouches/juice boxes.  Students in 7D are asked to bring a snack like a bag of chips or pretzels or a dessert like cookies or brownies (ready to serve).   Thank you for your help!  Our donations allow all students to enjoy the dance without needing to pay for refreshments.

7 th  and 8 th  Grade Dance

We look forward to seeing our seventh and eighth graders TONIGHT, for the dance from 7-9 pm in the Community Center.  The teachers have agreed to chaperone the dance, but of course parents are welcome to come in to take a few pictures at the beginning.  We also welcome all families to help clean up after the dance, usually less than a half hour if we all work together!  Thank you!

7th Grade Families - Can You Help?

In preparation for 8th grade graduation, we are looking for volunteers.
On graduation night, (June 1), it is tradition to have a reception in Fellowship Hall following the graduation service.  After graduation, families come downstairs for a little reception and photo opportunities.  We ask 7th grade parents to help set up a few tables with the cake and beverages for graduates and their families. (Decorations are setup by 8th grade parents, so no need to worry about that.)

It would be great if you could arrive on graduation night (June 1) at about 6:15 pm. Your main roles are to setup, serve, refill, and to help clean up afterwards.

We are looking for about 6 volunteers.  Feel free to bring your 7th grade student along to help as well!
If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Doherty at [email protected].
8th Grade Parents

Please join us for worship as the 8th graders lead chapel on  Wednesday,
May 16,
8:45 am at Grange Campus and Thursday, May 17, at 2:45 pm at Janesville Campus.  Please note the date difference for the two campuses.
We hope to see you there!
