There will be no school for students April 12-14. 

 

K-12 Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for April 12 and 13.

 

The following dates are scheduled snow make-up days: April 17, April 18, May 8 and May 30.


The Williamsport Area Middle School presented two performances of "Shrek, Jr.," this year's musical, on March 24 and 25.
INDUSTRY CERTIFIED Three WAHS students recently earned their industry certifications in Computer Information Technology through the high school's Career and Technical Education Program.
Welding students Cam Dickey and Andrew Schnars were recognized by Penn College recently for their placements in the American Welding Competition held on its campus in February.

2 WASD Odyssey Teams Advance to the World Finals

Two WASD Odyssey of the Mind teams are set to move on to the World Finals after competing at the state level on April 1 in Moon, Pa.
 
Seven teams from the district representing Cochran Primary School, Curtin and Lycoming Valley Intermediate schools, and Williamsport Area High School participated in the state event.
 
Those advancing to the World Finals are:

Curtin Intermediate School: First place, Division I, "A Superhero Cliffhanger," coached by Bret and Denise Southard. Team members: Olivia CiabattariReese KirkRoss MahlerAlanna RamosLilyana SponhouseMuireann Tran and Tyler Williamson

 

Williamsport Area High School: Second Place, Division III, "It's Time, OMER," coached by Spring Moore, Matthew Gutberlet and Heather LeBlanc. Team members: Charlotte DeBlooisPaige DiabelkoHannah HaussmannDeidre LeBlanc, Ariyana StaffordCarlee Weber and Madison Williamson.

 

The world competition is scheduled for May 24-27 at Michigan State University.

The WASD School Board began its annual Outstanding Student presentations on April 4, during which it honors students who exemplify academic excellence and school citizenship from the top grade at each building.
 
Third-grade students Collin Nasdeo and Ayden Kuns from Cochran and Stevens Primary schools, respectively, and sixth-grade student Carter Weaver from Curtin Intermediate School kicked off this year's round of presentation's as 2017's first honorees. The three are pictured above after receiving their certificates with school board President Lori Baer and Superintendent Dr. Timothy Bowers.
WAMS Student Uses Personal Experience to Give to Local Charities to Help Families
Following her father's terrifying, life-threatening medical episode several years ago, a 10-year-old Cecilia Fink conceived a charitable business plan to create and sell earrings to help families going through similar situations.
 
Since then, the now-13-year-old Williamsport Area Middle School student has raised more than $5,800 from her jewelry sales that have benefitted three local charities - with a fourth on the way.
 
It all began when Fink's father suffered an aortic dissection, during which the main valve of his heart started to split.

MEETING OF THE MINDS  Led by WASD's own Superintendent Dr. Bowers, area superintendents met with representatives from Bloomsburg University, Lock Haven University, Lycoming College, Pennsylvania College of Technology, and Mansfield University on April 5 in the WAHS Millionaire Cafe to discuss partnerships in education related to college preparedness (aka, the K-16 movement), among other topics.

Thanks to the WAHS Culinary Arts students who prepared and served the breakfast spread for our guests. The Culinary Arts program is one of 14 workforce development programs offered through the WAHS  Career and Technical Education

'Detectives' Dispatched to Cochran Primary School to Deliver Electrical Safety Message
PPL Electric Utilities brought "Safety Detectives in Hot Pursuit" to students at Cochran Primary School on March 31. The high-energy, interactive performance by the National Theatre for Children (NTC) educates students about electrical safety. It's part of PPL's plan to deliver its safety message to 100,000 students over five years.
 
As part of its community outreach on the topic, PPL sponsored performances at 30 schools and reached nearly 12,000 students in its service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania in March.

6 WAHS Musicians Perform in PMEA Band Festival; 3 Advance to PMEA All-State Band
Three WAHS students will move on as members of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's All-State Band.
 
The three selected to move on - Ben ByhamEthan Fisher and Kyle Miller - were among the six attended this week's PMEA Region 4 Band Festival. 

In addition, Michael Leblanc was selected as trombone player with the All-State Orchestra.

New Immunization Requirements for K-12 Students 2017-18 School Year Released
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has released new school immunization requirements for kindergarten through 12th-grade students, beginning with the 2017-18 academic year.
 
According to the state, students in all grades will need the following immunizations for attendance:
  • four doses of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis* (one dose on or after 4th birthday),
  • four doses of polio (fourth dose on or after 4th birthday and at least six months after previous dose given),
  • two doses of measles, mumps and rubella**,
  • three doses of hepatitis B, and
  • two doses of varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity.
