Pokémon GO: Catch Them at Your Library
The new gaming app Pokémon GO has attracted millions of players, and many of them have found their way to libraries across the country and around the world. Pokemon GO uses real locations to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover more than 100 species of Pokémon. If you're playing along, or know someone who is, be sure to stop by your library! All DPL locations are PokéStops where you can collect more Poké Balls and other items. And if you're really into it, meet up with Pokémon trainers for a group hunt at the Downtown Bend Library on August 8 at 1:00 p.m. You can learn more about the world of Pokémon at your library.
DPL's New Website is Live!
The Deschutes Public Library website received a big update recently! We worked hard to improve the site's navigation and overall look. Be sure to check it out. It's your gateway to books, movies, music, events, museum passes, story times, and so much more!
Community Conversations: Win an iPad
What does a strong and vibrant community look like to you? And what role does a library play in that community? As we look toward our future---one in which Deschutes County will continue to see record growth---we want to hear from you and what you want in a community. Please take five minutes to take our survey; when you do you can enter to win a free iPad! The survey is open through August 19, 2016. We'd love to hear from you! Find the survey here.
Meet Local Writers at Our Annual Local Author Fair
Celebrate local writers at the Downtown Bend Public Library at Second Sunday on August 14 at 2:00 p.m. This marks the sixth year that the Library has hosted an event featuring local writers and is just one way the Library works to support Central Oregon's vigorous and vibrant writing community. During the event authors working in a variety of genres, including memoir, poetry and guide books, will read and share from their work. Books will be available for sale.
Let's Be Pioneers! Fun Games for All
Jacob's Ladder? Cat's Cradle? Maybe Hoops and Graces or Stilts! The whole family will enjoy these and other games that have been around for more than a hundred years. Join us at the library for a fun time led by High Desert Museum staff.

Author! Author! Tickets Coming Soon
Keep your eyes on the Deschutes Public Library Foundation's website for Author! Author! season tickets. We are finalizing dates with the authors and once the times are locked in we'll have season tickets ready to sell. Season tickets are just $80 per person for all four authors, and all money raised from tickets sales helps the Foundation support library programs and services not funded through tax dollars. Individual tickets will go on sale, as available, after the season ticket sale window closes, so be sure to grab a season to ensure your seat!
Art in Your Libraries
Public libraries long ago expanded their offerings beyond books. They are now community centers, maker spaces, digital labs and more---including art galleries. At Deschutes Public Library, public wall space is turned into public galleries where people can view the work of professional and amateur artists who work in a variety of mediums. Currently on display:
Downtown Bend Library: Community art inspired by the theme "All Creatures Great and Small"
Redmond Library: Mixed media works from Undercover Quilters, Leslie Keller, Karen Turczak, Don Ross, and Webster Lily
Sisters Library: Children's art
Sunriver Library: Photography by Tom Lawler
