I hope you are having a wonderful summer.  We are busy preparing for the new school year that will be here before you know it!  Have you seen some of our 2015 Winchester ABC Grads around town? They stuck around this summer for activities and jobs. Keep an eye out and be sure to say HI if you see them. They'll be off to college any day now.

I'm sending this out today because we have some very important volunteer committees that could use some new members. It takes quite a village to keep our scholars excelling and moving forward!

Rides / Transportation Committee

The  scholars need rides to South Station and Logan Airport when they go home for breaks and summer vacation.  They also  have many extracurricular activities including: sports, test prep, music lessons, jobs, and errands (like getting haircuts), as well as enrichment and social events. When needed, we reach out to volunteers on this list to arrange rides.  This is a great way to get involved because you get to spend time with the scholars and get to know them.

The ABC House has a chef that provides dinner Monday through Thursday, and a plan in place for most weekend nights: from Saturday Take-out Nights, to Sunday dinners with host families.  But sometimes we need a volunteer to provide a meal, like a lunch on a snow day or a dinner if the chef is out sick, and a few other gaps through the year.  If you are on this committee we will reach out when the need for a meal arises, and if you are available to provide it, you can volunteer.
 

Temporary Host Fami lies

If you love hosting overnight guests, every once in while we need someone to host a scholar whose host family might be away during a host family weekend.  Other times a scholar participates in a sport that requires him to stay in town during a school vacation. When the need arises we reach out to the members of this committee to see who will be around to help.

If you've never volunteered before, these opportunities will give you an excellent chance to get to know the program and the scholars better.   If you are a veteran volunteer, maybe a former board member or former host parent, these are great ways to stay involved in the program!
