A summer filled with Happy Reunions!

Because most of the children we serve in our residential programs are in our state's custody, we work closely with their DSS caseworkers to develop a long term plan for their futures. One of the most rewarding parts of our jobs is to assist our boy's transition into a "forever" home that will be filled with love, understanding, and a commitment to establishing strong family ties.  Locating families who are willing to accept the challenge of raising a child who has suffered from traumatic stress is not always an easy task but this summer we have met many people who are willing to do just that!  Throughout this process we are there to support and affirm their decision to welcome the child into their home.  Fortunately, our staff is well trained to educate and counsel the boys and their families as begin this complicated journey.

At times we are able to reunite our boys with their parents or extended family members who they have known for most of their lives. Other times we are able to rekindle a past relationship with former foster families. Occasionally we locate family members who either did not know the child or have a strong relationship with them before they were contacted about the child's need for a family, but because of a desire to offer the child a sense of connectedness with their family's traditions and history, will step up to become the child's primary caretaker. It is especially rewarding when we are able to assist prospective adoptive parents bond with a child who will become their son. This summer it feels as though miracles are happening over and over again.

Several months ago, we invited Sam's Grandparents to visit him. After being reunited with their Grandson and spending the weekend on The Farm in one of our Family Suites, they made the decision to work on giving Sam a safe, abuse free life with them. They passed all of the background checks, completed all the paperwork, and became licensed foster parents. Recently Sam moved to their family home in Charlotte.

Working through several obstacles in the reunification process, Kenny and his Mother's family ties remained strong during many setbacks and court appearances. Thanks to the support of our staff, they met all of their goals and will be reunited before the school years starts.

Eddie was able to complete his treatment with us and returned to live with his Foster Father who is interested in adopting him, and Chris has returned to the home of a former Foster Mother. Right before he left he told me, I decided to start making good choices".

Daevon is returning to Beaufort to live with his Grandmother, his brother, and his sister and Izaiah is getting ready to move to New York where he will begin a new life with his Grandmother and other extended family members.

Although we are sad to say good-bye to the children who have brightened our lives over the past several months, we are proud of the changes they have made and are even prouder of the  adults in their lives who have let the boys know how much they are wanted and loved. If you think you have what it takes to open up your heart and your home to a child in need of a forever family, consider becoming a foster or adoptive parent. There are so many kids in need of forever homes in South Carolina.
