Odds and Ends

--- Don't forget! MTGA is once again offering its Ranelius Scholarship program to worthy students. A total of $5,000 in scholarship funds are available for this competitive process.  Deadline is February 15, so please feel free to forward the scholarship information to those interested.

 Scholarship Overview & Application

--- MTGA staffer Lara Durben started her own blog late last fall - it's a mix of personal stories and her life as "MN's Gobble Gal" (or, as the boss would like to say, the "Poultry Princess of Facebook"!) Her blog has been viewed by people all over the U.S. and in 12 international countries to date. This week, she decided to write about the myth that turkeys and chickens are fed growth hormones and steroids. Check it out

Dear ,

It's been an exciting week for CEAM, as we debuted the organization's very first stand-alone website! Check out the details below.

We're also knee deep in the planning process for several events - the MTGA Board Retreat,  Poultry Day at the Capitol and the Midwest show, to name a few.

Sounds like our mini "heat wave" in Minnesota this week is about over - it's going to get cold again this weekend. Hope you all stay warm and safe. Thanks for reading!

CEAM Debuts New Website!
CEAM website screen shot

CEAM was excited this week to officially debut its very own website, www.mnchicken.org. The website includes sections with information on Minnesota's chicken and egg farmers, nutrition and recipes, poultry facts and figures, and a special secure area for its own members. CEAM staff worked closely with the crew at communications firm CMA to develop the website and we're quite pleased with the results.

CEAM received some great media coverage of the debut, including these links below and via Facebook and Twitter - thanks to all who posted our information and/or retweeted our press release!

Be sure to check the new website out and feel free to let us know what you think!

Along with the new website, CEAM also can be found on both Facebook (www.facebook.com/minnesotachicken) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/mnchicken or @mnchicken.) Note: you do NOT have to be a member of Facebook or Twitter to view our pages and see what we're up to on social media.
Legislators Now in Session; Poultry Day at the Capitol in February

Minnesota legislators went back to work this week, including many newly elected officials who are learning the ropes this winter. What does this mean for MTGA and CEAM members? It means we need your voice at the Capitol!

Please plan to join us for Poultry Day at the Capitol on February 19. Details and online registration are available at the link below - and please contact us with any questions you may have about this important event!

Increased Food Costs Due to US Ethanol Policy are Eating Family Budgets

A new study released yesterday demonstrates the dramatic change in U.S. food affordability trends since the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) came into being in 2005.  Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon, LCC, the study's author, shows that compared to long term trends, in 2012 the average family of four saw about a $2,000 increase in food costs, meaning that for the first time since the 1970s, food is becoming less affordable. Sparboe Farms Partners with Fareway Foods To Fill the Truck

Beginning on January 8th, 2013, with any size carton of Sparboe Farms eggs purchased at any Fareway store, Sparboe Farms will donate eggs through the Iowa Food Bank Association, which supports many of the communities where Fareway has stores. The goal is to fill an entire semi-truck with eggs - that is nearly 20,000 dozen eggs!

Many local families are unable to feed their families fresh food, especially in the winter months. Fresh eggs are a low cost, high value source of protein, providing healthy nutrition and, with a low glycemic index, they help you feel fuller longer.

Giving back to the community is a core value for both Sparboe Farms and Fareway Stores. They are excited to work together to feed so many families.

Find more information at www.sparboe.com, www.fareway.com, www.iowafba.org or on these company's respective Facebook pages.
