Dear ,

Welcome to Friday, folks! We've got staffers going every which way today ... Steve is at the Academy for Sciences & Agriculture (high school) today for a career fair, while both our Teresas are exhibiting at the annual conference for FACS teachers (food and consumer science). Lots of ways to talk turkey, chicken and eggs and the farmers who raise them!

Next week the National Turkey Federation gears up for its annual convention and we will see many of you in San Diego. You can follow the convention on Twitter (hashtag #ntfac13) and Facebook ("like" Turkey The Perfect Protein).

P.S. Because of the NTF Annual Convention, there will be no Wingtips next week. We will resume on February 22.

God Made a Farmer
Super Bowl Commercial

This week nearly 250 regional, state and national farm, ranch and agribusiness organizations  - including MTGA, CEAM, the National Turkey Federation and the National Chicken Council - sent a heartfelt "thank you" to Chrysler Group Chair and CEO Sergio Marchionne - and his Ram Trucks team - for its outstanding XLVII Super Bowl commercial "So God Made a Farmer."

The ad kicks off a campaign declaring 2013 "The Year of the Farmer," and features gorgeous still images from ten noted photographers and legendary radio broadcaster Paul Harvey's recitation of his essay on the virtues of the American farmer, which he originally delivered at a Future Farmers of America conference in 1978. Mr. Harvey passed away in 2009. The commercial got a ton of PR from social media and major media outlets alike.

HumaneWatch also ran a Super Bowl ad alerting folks to deceptive fundraising tactics of the Humane Society of the U.S. and urging people to contribute directly to their local animal shelters instead.

Chicken Wings Huge for Super Bowl

The National Chicken Council released its "2013 Wing Report" to the media on January 22 and to date, there have been 7,407 unique internet articles, stories and blog posts about "chicken wings." In addition, there have been 1,600 radio and broadcast television news stories about "chicken wings" over that two week span.

The National Chicken Council was interviewed or mentioned specifically in 1,268 of those articles since January 22nd, and NCC reported that about half of those stories mentioned ethanol production as putting a strain on corn and feed prices.

NCC estimates that over 1.2 billion chicken wings were eaten on Super Bowl weekend!

Ag Economist Urges RFS Reform

Dr. Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon LLC, spoke at a media briefing on February 4 on behalf of the National Chicken Council and National Turkey Federation. According to Elam, the Renewable Fuel Standard is broken, but Congress can fix the rule by acting now and opening an inclusive, robust debate that leads to extensive reform.

Congress in 2005 enacted the first Renewable Fuel Standard which mandated levels of ethanol to be blended with gasoline. In 2007 that ethanol mandate was expanded, and biodiesel was added. The Environmental Protection Agency on January 31 proposed new percentage standards for four fuel categories that are part of the agency's Renewable Fuel Standard. The proposal is open for a 45-day public comment period, and the agency will consider feedback before the proposal is finalized.

Russia Bans US Turkey Over Ractopamine

Russia will ban imports of US turkey because of concerns about the use of feed additive ractopamine, Russia's Veterinary and Phyto-Sanitary Surveillance Service (VPSS) said in a statement on Monday.

The service will impose a temporary ban on US turkey starting from Feb. 11, it said.

It earlier decided to ban imports of US beef and pork from the same date for the same reason.

A US poultry trade group on Monday said US turkey companies that ship to Russia do not use ractopamine.
