On Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. the Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA) will celebrate its 34th year of service to the environment and communities throughout and beyond New Jersey's Great Swamp Watershed region with its Annual Gala Celebration!

This year's visual theme is inspired by the beauty and grace of the monarch butterfly ( Danaus plexippus), and our Guest of Honor will be Nicolas W. Platt, Mayor of the Township of Harding. Mr. & Mrs. Finn Wentworth have generously agreed to serve as our Honorary Co-chairs for the event.

All are welcome to join us as we commemorate our anniversary at the Brook Lake Country Club located at 139 Brooklake Road in Florham Park. Festivities will include...
 
Watershed Watch
Each year GSWA closely monitors a number of local issues and activities of significance to the health and beauty of waters and land in the Great Swamp Watershed region. New information about these "environmental hot spots" is published in Across the Watershed (print) and Across the Watershed...In Brief (electronic) as short updates under the Watershed Watch heading. Securing Copper Springs: A Step Ahead In Long Hill Township

On May 14, 2015, Indoor Soccer, LLC, appeared before the Long Hill Township Committee to propose a significant change in zoning and expansion plans for the development of their new sports facility on a property along New Vernon Road customarily referred to a Copper Springs. Adjacent to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, the area currently includes a small pond with surrounding wetlands. The pond and the wetlands serve as wildlife habitat, and help reduce flooding and stormwater runoff problems in the Meyersville area.
 
Epic Preservation Win for Morris County & the Great Swamp Watershed

In June 2015, a 136-acre parcel of land, a portion of Giralda Farms, located in Chatham Township, was opened to the public after many years of private ownership. The Great Swamp Watershed Association is proud to have played an important part in this landmark win for open space in Morris County.

GSWA's Annual Volunteer Picnic & Awards Ceremony

On Thursday June 26, 2015 the Great Swamp Watershed Association threw a party in honor of all the volunteers who provided their invaluable assistance to our many environmental programs over the past year.

RBC Wealth Management Parsippany Complex Raises Funds for Great Swamp Watershed Association

On Wednesday, June 3, 2015, RBC Wealth Management Parsippany Complex held its regular Tour de Swamp, an exercise (spinning) event designed to raise money for the Great Swamp Watershed Association's many water quality programs, including our chemical stream monitoring, macroinvertebrate surveys, and summertime E. coli testing.

Did You Know?
Is It a Dog, a Wolf, or a Coyote?

Some time ago I took my two young grandsons on a hike in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. It was a beautiful summer day, with plenty of sunshine. As we walked along a remote trail, my older grandson signaled for us to stop. He pointed to the bushes on the left, to a grey mass of fur that had two bright eyes intently studying us.

"Look granddad, a dog!"

We stopped in our tracks, with our eyes fixed on this furry creature. Was it really a dog? Could it really be someone's pet, which had strayed deep into the Great Swamp?
