Local Students Inspire Interest in Computer Science with Hour of Code
During  Computer Science Education week, December 4-10, senior and sophomore computer science students from Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School (RVTHS) and their teacher Ryan Robidoux ran Hour of Code events at three local middle schools. This global initiative promotes computer science, which is the design and creation of computational systems to solve problems. Click here to learn more about Hour of Code.

Middle school students at the Ford Middle School in Acushnet, the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School, and Old Rochester Regional Junior High School in Mattapoisett participated in coding challenges using Chromebooks as well as "unplugged" activities. These unplugged activities involved students developing algorithmic solutions to have a human robot stacking cups in various patterns.

Cardboard Challenge Provides Real-World Experiences
Exciting, innovative, and creative were some of the adjectives students, parents, and educators used to describe the Cardboard Challenge.

On November 3, 2017, sixth grade East Bridgewater students were engaged in planning and designing an arcade game using cardboard and recycled materials.  The hands-on project was organized by educators Tori Cameron and Laura McPhee and offered students the opportunity to explore ideas and find ways to bring their ideas to fruition.

Parents were invited to attend and observed the resourcefulness of the students and how they worked as a team to create their project.  The activity supports the goals of the East Bridgewater Public Schools to ensure students develop the skills and attitudes needed to be successful in school, college, and the 21st Century workplace.
