In our neck of the woods autumn has arrived and the colours are resplendent - check out out that fiery sumac above!

When fall comes, I (Jay) feel the urge to make DAL - a traditional savoury Indian lentil stew.  It's a total comfort food.

You can read about why I love to make dal in my recent blogpost, and I even reveal my somewhat unconventional recipe - and cooking style - for those who love to cook with reckless abandon...or with a precise recipe (I did my best to make it precise).

I make lots of dal at one time and often freeze much of it.

And that's where our Stainless Steel Rectangular Airtight Containers come in - they are ideal for storing and/or freezing big batches of soups, stews, harvest veggies, berries, pet food.

Single-Use Plastic Bags Banned in California

Yesterday morning, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a ban on the distribution of single-use plastic bags in grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience and liquor stores.

This makes California the first US state to pass a ban on single-use plastic bags and it is a huge precedent.

It happened because solid data showed that plastic bag bans do work to reduce plastic litter and change consumer attitudes, without having apocalyptic effects on jobs and low income communities, as argued by the plastic industry.

Read more about it on the California Government site.  There are tons of media reports on the issue, but we like this Salon article highlighting this is one step forward, and there is plenty more to do.
