January 2017
Dear Staff -

Happy New Year!  On behalf of myself and our newly formed Wellness Committee, I would like to extend my best wishes for a happy and healthy 2017! The health and wellness of our BPS staff is something that we are taking very seriously, and something that we do not want to take for granted.  We know that employees who practice self-care are more productive and will thrive at work and home. So often self-care is forgotten, or put on the back burner.  You work with unwavering commitment to serving our students, oftentimes sacrificing your health and well-being.

We are trying to find opportunities to help you prioritize your health.  The newly-opened Bolling Wellness Center is a part of that. We would love to see more members of our BPS community take advantage of this convenient exercise option.  If the gym is not for you, BPS on the Move is for runners and walkers of all levels.

In the months ahead we will share opportunities to join TEAM BPS at various community runs and activities. We are looking for ways to have fun together!  If you have suggestions, please let us know! Please take this survey so we can get to know a little more about your fitness goals and interests. If you are interested in becoming more involved in BPS Wellness, consider joining our Bolling Wellness Committee

Evidence shows that even a little physical activity benefits your health.  Please join us in stepping away from your desk in whatever way works for you.

Best,
Makeeba McCreary, Chief of Staff and External Affairs

BPS on the Move Update

We are still moving and grooving as the seasons change, but we must admit, our numbers have dropped considerably. We have created new a #bpsonthemove interest form  to gather days of the week preference from our existing members, as well as new recruits who'd like to join!
We plan to run straight through the winter and would love more company out on the road!
As a reminder, our club aims to be a place for all speeds and abilities and for those who can't commit on a weekly basis. We will continue to do our best ensuring that everyone feels welcome!

About BPS on the Move

BPS on the Move #BPSonthemove is a running/walking group open all Boston Public Schools employees that meets on Wednesdays at 5:15pm on the main floor of the Bolling Building. This group meets after work and typically goes out for runs/walks ranging in distance from 3- 5 miles where individuals can choose the length they would like to go. They reconvene at 6:00pm for a group picture that is usually photo-shopped to whatever the weekly theme is.
BPS on the Move is always accepting new members and the goal of the group is to complete quarterly runs out in the Massachusetts community.

Healthy Teams, Healthy Meetings
Starting fresh with a new year, now is the time to go the extra mile for your department. No matter what your resolutions are, small changes in workplace habits can go a long way for your health.

An easy resolution is to provide healthy snacks like fruits, veggies, and granola bars (watch out for sugar!) for your department.  Make your meetings a munchkin  free   zone !

Or, grab your team and head to the gym or BPS on the Move together. Working out together will help you release stress, build accountability, and build relationships that will make you more productive.

Tips for Stress Reduction

Did you know that you can reduce your level of stress in just a few minutes a day? Here is one of many exercises you can do throughout the day to keep your stress levels low.

Take a Minute to Breathe
1. Sit or stand in a relaxed position.
2. Slowly inhale through your nose, counting to five in your head.
3. Let the air out from your mouth, counting to eight in your head as it leaves your lungs. Repeat several times.
