Ways to Prepare for Winter Weather

Looks like some snow may be headed our way! VDOT (the state agency in charge of treating and plowing most roads) is currently preparing for winter weather, and there are ways you can prepare as well:

- Try to complete essential errands before tonight's evening commute. Give VDOT trucks room to salt the roads and avoid being stuck in traffic when snow hits.

- Park in driveways or coordinate with neighbors to park on the same side of the road. This will allow a larger path when plows begin to focus on neighborhood streets.

- Visit virginiadot.org/novaemergency for frequent VDOT press releases, important messages, FAQs and other resources.

- Follow VDOT's local updates on Twitter @vadotnova

- Follow Fairfax County's local updates Twitter @fairfaxcounty

- Sign up for Fairfax Alerts.

- Check Fairfax County's Emergency Information Blog.

- Read Fairfax County NewsCenter's articles on 8 Ways to Prepare for the Forecasted Storm and Winter Weather Preparedness Info.

ADDITIONAL INORMATION:

If the County is closed, my staff and I check office phone messages (703-324-2321) and email ([email protected]) remotely. If we do not answer right away, please leave a detailed message about your question or concern, along with your phone number and email address. We will get back to you as soon as we are able to make sure you are getting the assistance you need.

If a large amount of snow hits our area, it may take VDOT a few days of plowing before all neighborhood streets become passable. Please give VDOT at least 48 hours to reach your street in the event of heavy snow. It's helpful to remember that VDOT is in charge of plowing 13,413 miles of pavement in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and will prioritize interstates and major roadways before accessing neighborhood cul-de-sacs.
