The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

A report in the San Jose Mercury News a couple of days ago reported that local emergency rooms are overflowing with flu patients.  We've seen the ER during flu season and it looked like a post-catastrophe scene: gurneys lining the halls, wheezing, coughing and sounds of suffering, absolutely no privacy, even for the most personal of functions, caregivers scrambling to try to be attentive to all who need assistance -- not nice.

As primary care docs, we also see the sadness and low energy moods that accompany shorter, darker days.  Could there be a connection between flu susceptibility and mental/emotional lows?

Perhaps the main focus point in this edition of the newsletter is that flu infections can be largely prevented and treated with naturopathic medicine and that our therapies can also address Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  Conventional medicine has few tools to address these conditions other than pills and palliative care.

As usual, Dr. Connie begins, with a discussion of SAD; Dr. Marcel offers thoughts on the flu vaccination and vaccinations in general; Brad B. presents views on how sitting improperly affects our overall structure; Dr. Connie returns with an insightful perspective on influenza and the flu shot; and Jane H. talks about mental/emotional stability in the presence of a cold or flu.  Other articles -- ProBoost Thymic Protein, Myers Cocktail and a recipe for a detox salad -- offer support for viral infections.

Hernandez Center articles include a discussion of how chemotherapy ravages our internal organs; an alternative doctor's basic approach to dealing with cancer; and the power of the ketogenic diet for starving cancer cells.

May all beings be healthy and happy!

Dr. Connie's Musings...
Dr. Connie is not so sad in SAD season!

SAD Season

While the days ARE lengthening in January, we are still in the midst of the darkest of days. Along with the letdown from the long Thanksgiving through New Year's holiday season, the dearth of light and the desolate winter landscapes contribute to the prevalence of the winter blues. These blues are so common that a diagnosis has been created to define them. SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is estimated to affect millions.

SAD has much to do with light, or rather the absence thereof. Light regulates the pineal gland, the master control gland of the body. The pineal gland was described by Descartes as the Seat of the Soul, and is known by mystics to be the negative pole of the energy center known as the 6th chakra, integral to intuition, and the seat of cosmic consciousness.  The pineal gland, responding to environmental light and darkness, produces the hormone melatonin.  Melatonin regulates circadian rhythm, promotes sleep, supports immunity, plays a large role in mood, and is used in the treatment of certain cancers.

In our first practice in Vermont, we installed a full spectrum light in the waiting room to treat all incoming patients. These SAD dispelling light therapy boxes have been available for years now, and are a form of phototherapy. Phototherapy, previously known as heliotherapy, has also been used for non seasonal depression and sleep disorders such as occur in Parkinson's Disease. Classical heliotherapy recommendations involve short periods of full body exposure to the natural light of the sun when the sun is not at its brightest. (You know what is said about mad dogs and Englishmen. They are the only ones to bathe in the noon day sun.)

Skin exposure to the rays of the sun allows the transformation of vitamin D to an active form, although genetics and age may adversely affect this transformation. Thus there is a widespread need to use Vitamin D to bring blood values up to optimal. Many SAD sufferers benefit from Vitamin D supplementation.

Aside from pineal issues and depressed levels of Vitamin D, there may be something about our 21st century urban lifestyles that contributes to SAD. We might take a cue from animal adaptations. In their epic annual opt out, bears build body fat, then hibernate for the duration of the winter, as do skunks and chipmunks.  Frogs and turtles find deep cold water in which they can become dormant. Birds migrate to warmer climes.  What's a modern day person to do?

If the migration option is open to you, use it to enjoy more hospitable climes. (See Pacific Naturopathic Retreat Center article, below.)

Though hibernation is not an option, you could take the opportunity to slow down for a moment, to decrease outer activities and to prioritize your inner life through meditation, reflection, journaling or collaging. Choose uplifting music. Use color therapy. (Orange is warming; yellow is joyful.)  Try diffusing essential oils to lift your mood. (Lavender and ylang ylang are two favorites). Dietarily, seasonally appropriate foods are root vegetables and warming foods, soups rather than salads. Enjoy intimate gatherings with close family and friends.  Take a few moments to just be.

The Flu Shot: Just Bad Medicine

My father lived to be 100 years old.  I think the main reason he left his body was that at 99 years, he broke his hip playing kick ball with 5-year-olds.  Until his late 70s, following the direction of his primary care physician in Florida, he received a flu shot every year.  Every year he was sick with the flu.  Then, we began to strengthen his immune system and alter his diet, and advised him to stop getting the annual flu shot.  He was never sick again.  What's the story here?  OMG, could the flu shot actually be BAD for you?

Another story... when Dr. Connie and I had a clinic in Vermont, a epidemic of pertussis (whooping cough) broke out in the town in which we were practicing.  Our unvaccinated 4-year-old son contracted the disease.  But so did fifty percent of the children in town, including those who HAD been vaccinated for pertussis!  Our son was not in a sick bed for one minute - he had his normal energy, running and playing, though it broke our hearts every time he "whooped." The rest of the children in town with the disease were quite ill, in bed, with their parents visiting our clinic asking for help.  Could people who are vaccinated actually become sicker than unvaccinated people if they contract the illness they are vaccinated against?

Here's a bit of immunology 101: The heart of the immune system is the white blood cells (WBCs).  There are several kinds of WBCs, each playing a different protective role in immune function. Much like an army, the WBCs are the first line of defense.  If an invader (bacteria, virus, fungus) makes it past the WBCs, the reserves are called up.  The reserves are the antibodies (ABs).  When the body is confronted with an invader, this natural sequence of events strengthens the immune system - much like doing bicep curls builds the biceps muscle.

All vaccines skip the white blood cell response and stimulate production of antibodies (ABs).  ABs neutralize pathogens in the body.  ABs are like memories - they are created in response to a specific pathogen and remember past pathogen insults to the body.  But this "memory pool" of ABs is not infinite.  We do know that the antibody pool can become exhausted - we just do not know how often the pool can be accessed before this depletion occurs.

Now, two questions for readers of this article:  When you were a child or young adult, how many people did you know who had contracted cancer?  By this time in your life, how has that number of people changed?

I don't think it is merely coincidence that the current cancer epidemic is so huge.  One in three people will contract cancer by age 65.  Also, there is a stunning and undeniable synchronicity between the rise of three letter viruses, like HIV, CMV, EBV and others, and the beginning of mass vaccinations.  Could vaccinations deplete the immune system to the point where the body becomes susceptible to opportunistic infections and cancer?

It has long been my thought that in 100 years or so, the practice of mass vaccinations will be relegated to the historical file cabinet where medical treatments like bleeding with leeches are kept.

Easier Sitting:
Plus, Three Feldenkrais Movement Lessons for sitting
Brad Beldner

Chronic pain from prolonged sitting can happen in any seated position including sitting in your car, relaxing on your couch, sitting at lectures, sporting events and even in a seated meditation.
I have helped many of my clients learn to sit more comfortably by teaching them Feldenkrais Movement Exercises that help to free up their hip joints to help balance and support the structure of their spine shoulders, head and neck.

I work with many people that have developed a rounded lower back from being folded forward (slouching) while sitting, which creates shortened flexor muscles on the front of the body, notably the powerful psoas muscle.

If you have a lumbar support on the back of your chair that is pushing the lower back forward, it can place stress on the Psoas by forcing it into extension further over stretching it.

A shortened psoas and hip flexors can cause discomfort anywhere along your spine including the low back, hip and neck. It also can place your head and neck in a forward position that can inhibit circulation and nerve conduction, creating pain and numbness in the shoulders, forearms, wrists, and hands. Spinal ligaments can also become over-stretched and strain the discs and surrounding structures in the spine.

Feldenkrais Movement Lessons for Sitting

I have seen many chronic back problems clear up by practicing Feldenkrais movement lessons.

The Feldenkrais movement lessons videos (links below) will help you learn how to relax your Psoas and hip flexors and gently let your pelvis roll forward slightly in a relaxed neutral position (Figure A) which relaxes the back and balances the spine versus rounding the back (Figure B) which compresses and constrains the back.

These lessons will also help to develop a taller and easy to maintain upright posture while sitting as well as help to correct scoliosis.

1) Sitting More Comfortably, Lesson One:  Flexion and extension:

2) Sitting More Comfortably, Lesson Two:  Turning

3) Sitting More Comfortably, Lesson Three:  Side Bending

What to do About the Flu?

There's a common misunderstanding as to exactly what the flu is and is not. A fair number of people report to us that they catch the flu multiple times each season.  They describe low grade fevers, fatigue, episodes of coughing, sore throats and runny noses, possibly muscle aches and pains. These are unpleasant symptoms, probably viral in origin, but not at all likely to have been caused by the flu virus. The flu virus is a group of specific influenza A and B viral strains. These strains cause much more serious, even life threatening illness.

Manufacturers of the flu vaccine must prepare the current year's vaccine months before the flu season starts.  They therefore must guess at which viral strains will be prevalent in the coming year. Even when the guess is accurate, the flu vaccine generally  only offers a 40 to 60% lower chance of catching the flu.  The estimated efficacy varies considerably by age group. In 2016-2017, efficacy was estimated at 25% for those over 65, but 61% for children from 6 months to 8 years. When the virus mutates, as it did in 2014-2015 flu season, the vaccine was estimated to be about 19% effective. (Guesstimates of efficacy vary greatly due to manipulation of statistics by interested parties.)
With the exception of FluMist, the nasal flu vaccine that, with a 97% failure rate, was so absurdly ineffective that it is no longer recommended, the Center for Disease Control makes several arguments for getting the flu vaccine, even given its relative ineffectiveness. They reason that even 25% lower risk is better than no reduction in risk at all, and that many must be vaccinated for a population to develop "herd immunity" which stops the transmission of a disease. In addition, the risk of transmission to vulnerable populations is reduced when the flu is reduced by any percentage.

Arguments on the other side include possibility of injection site injuries, and adverse effects such as development of Guillain-Barre syndrome. Science Magazine raises questions as to the effect on life long immunity of initial viral exposure via vaccine. And Canadian and other research notes that those not vaccinated have better resistance to other viral related illnesses.

With conflicting data and opinions, each person must make their own decision for themselves and their family.

However, it truly isn't the flu shot or nothing. Years ago, working at in insurance company, we conducted a mini study comparing sick days of those immunized against those who supported themselves with naturopathic protocols. The naturopathic protocols won, hands down. Granted, those people following the protocols were more health conscious to begin with. But then again, that's the point.

Decrease sugar consumption. Optimize nutrient levels, particularly Vitamin D, and thyroid and adrenal function. Support the immune system. We use homeopathics for prevention and treatment, bioflavanoid concentrates, thymic protein products, supplements specific to each person's condition, Myers Cocktails. As in all microbial disease, the combination of the virulence of the organism and the receptivity of the host determines the disease.

Whether immunized or not, you may or may not contract the flu. Either way, naturopathy offers many options to decrease the risk and severity of serious viral episodes, not limited to the flu.

The Myers Cocktail: Q&A
Powerful, Safe, Time-Tested, Easily and Quickly Administered
A Perfect Therapy for Preventing and Treating Colds and Flus

Why do an IV? Aren't we able to get the nutrients we need from our diets?

In a perfect world, this is true.  But the typical American diet is lacking in adequate nutrient content and even with a stellar diet, the nutrient quality in the foods has steadily declined.  Also, chemicals, toxins, stress, allergies, genetics, infections and other reasons, many people suffer from compromised gastrointestinal function. The result is impaired digestion, decreased capacity to break down foods and compromised ability to absorb the vital nutrients needed to just maintain health.

When nutrients are given intravenously, the digestive system is bypassed and nutrients are delivered directly into the cells. Each cell gets to bathe in a nutrient-dense solution, so that these vitamins are easily accessible, in the most bio-available form, allowing the greatest potential for healing and ENERGY.

J ust what is a Myers cocktail?

The basic Myers' Cocktail, is an intravenous vitamin nutrient supplement that was formulated more than 40 years ago for promoting healing and restoring energy and stamina.  The standard Myers Cocktail at Pacific Naturopathic consists of magnesium, calcium, selenium, zinc, vitamin B-5 vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C. Other vitamins or ingredients may be added to the Myers' Cocktail protocol, depending on the patient's diagnosis and overall health as well as the condition being treated.

What is the Myers cocktail used for?

The "cocktail" is indicated for chronic acute viral illness/colds, fatigue, fibromyalgia, vitamin deficiency, anxiety, stress, depression, migraine or tension headaches, general immune boosting, gut malabsorption, leaky gut and support to cancer patients. It can be useful in situations where oral nutrients or other therapies are not working. When nutrients are given intravenously, your digestive system is bypassed and a much higher level of nutrition can be delivered directly to your cells via the bloodstream.  If you tend to be anxious or overstressed, it can help to calm and relax you. If you tend to have fatigue and feel run down, it can help boost your energy.  There are so many diseases and symptoms that benefit from this therapy. It is like getting a supercharge of vitality!

Have there been any studies on the Myers Cocktail?

Yes.  Yale researchers recently tested the Myers Cocktail on a group of patients in a double-bind, placebo controlled randomized trial. The study measured tender points, depression levels and quality of life. Significant improvement was shown in all pertinent outcome measures with the Myers' group and none with the placebo group. There are currently 274 clinical research trials employing intravenous micronutrient therapy. About half of these concern treatment or prevention of cancer.  The remainder cover a wide range of medical and health conditions.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The Myers Cocktail is the perfect solution for immune deficiencies and flagging
energy levels. If you receive it at the beginning of a cold or flu,
it can keep the illness from manifesting.  If you receive it in the midst of
a viral illness, it can lessen the symptoms and shorten the duration.
______________________________________________________________________________________

How many treatments does it take to feel better?

Patients vary in the number of treatments needed, but a typical protocol is infusions once or twice a week. Some patients experience improvement after only one treatment, and many report significant healing by the fourth infusion. People who have chronic conditions may need ongoing treatment of several times per week, or periodically every few weeks to regain their energy.

How long does a Myers infusion take?

A typical Myers drip takes about 15 minutes.

Is It Safe?

The Myers Cocktail is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapy that is well tolerated by most people. It carries an extremely low risk of serious adverse side effects. If the protocol is administered quickly there may be a sensation of warmth and flushing. This is due to the rapid rise of magnesium. Some patients may also have the taste of vitamins in their mouth shortly after they are given the infusion.

Is there any preparation needed before receiving a Myers?

Before your treatment: It is best to prepare for the Myers' by drinking plenty of water and having a meal within a couple of hours before coming to the office the office.

Is a Myers Cocktail right for me?

At Pacific Naturopathic, we provide comprehensive holistic medical care, including thorough evaluation of each patient's symptoms, health, and needs.  During our evaluation, we can determine if IV therapy will be beneficial to your health goals.  After an initial consultation, we can schedule IV treatments to be performed in the office by one of our fully trained, licensed and certified Naturopathic Doctors.

Experience the rejuvenating magic of a Myers Cocktail: Usually $145.
NOTE: FOR THE REST OF JANUARY, THE MYER'S COCKTAIL IS $125.

Be the Boss of that Cold or Flu

Jane 2013

Lately I've been wondering why it is that I feel unafraid of getting the flu when many friends around me have been severely hit. Could it be the chicken soup I keep in the fridge? Well, no doubt that helps, but I think it might be what I do for work. Yes, I'm talking about EFT Tapping.

I've written about EFT here many times and perhaps it might sound like a snake oil cure-all to you. However, the truth is that it helps just about everything.

I teach EFT to all my clients so, in effect, I'm tapping frequently.  Furthermore, I also tap for my own issues, which can be physical or emotional.

But the culprit allowing the flu or cold into your life, is stress. Sure, blame the virus on someone in your family for bringing it but when your immune system is stressed the welcome mat is out for whatever is in town.

EFT Tapping is deceptively simple but incredibly powerful.   You just tap with your fingers on 9 acupuncture points on your head and trunk while saying what is bothering you. The more specific you are, the more relief you will feel. When we tap on our stress, overwhelm, anxiety, or anything else going on, our immune system becomes stronger and more resilient.

But let's say you have already caught that bug, tapping can be extremely helpful to reduce the symptoms, the discomfort, and speed you to recovery.

It's more effective to show you a tapping session than to describe it so check out this great practitioner, Julie Schiffman demonstrating it. Just follow along and you will understand more. Yes, it looks weird, but it is amazingly effective.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHbHRq53NZ0

It is very helpful to take a little time each morning and night to do tapping for any health issue, plus whatever emotions that come up. After EFT tapping on health, then tap on relationships, work, and goals - this takes just a few minutes and will get your day off to a strong start.

It's amazing, but tapping for just a few minutes can improve your whole day.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- safe and effective -

thermography

The sole purpose of a mammogram is to identify calcifications and other lumps and bumps in the breast tissue, which would indicate a need for biopsy to rule out cancer.

Breast thermography, on the other hand, looks for temperature and vascular changes which indicate a disruption in physiology.

In thermography, the thermal risk rating given to each breast reflects a deviation from the norm. That deviation may reflect an individual variation, injury, inflammation, lymphatic congestion, or the need to rule out a developing cancer. Addressing the cause of the deviation can reverse the deviation from the norm, and reduce the thermal risk rating, implying a lower risk for breast cancer.

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

There is light in the darkness

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

How Chemotherapy Damages Your Body: Internal Damage

Serena

Most people aren't told what chemotherapy does to their body, and I feel like it's important you get that information. So I've created  Part 1 (physical changes) and Part 2 (internal damage).

This post is only about the internal damage that occurs because of chemotherapy. For information on how chemotherapy affects you physically, please read part 1,  How Chemotherapy Damages Your Body: Physical Changes.

Dr. Marcel Comments:
As a doctor who offers adjunctive cancer care to his patients, I have seen dozens of people who have opted for chemotherapy.  I have also seen the ravages of chemo.  This presents me with a dilemma. If one of my patients opts for chemo, it is my job to offer support in ameliorating the side effects. Unless asked, I keep my opinions to myself for the simple reason that if a patient strongly believes a therapy is going to help them, the chance of that therapy actually working increases dramatically. When asked by a patient if chemo is a wise decision, my response makes three points: 1) If they believe that it will help, the chances of it doing so increase dramatically; 2) I will help ameliorate the side effects as best I can; and 3) Finally, my experience has taught me that opting for chemo initiates a race: will the cancer kill them or will the chemotherapy kill them.  This article offers a rational perspective and represents my experience very well.  My feeling is that 100 years from now, chemotherapy will have gone the way of leeches and bleeding ill people.

By Prof. Keith Scott-Mumby MD, MB ChB, PhD

I call my three pillars to beat cancer the "survival triangle." If you're serious about keeping (or getting) cancer out of your life, follow these steps to better health. They are simple, proven fighters that will make you a winner against this devastating disease. Taking a single one and making it part of your life will make a huge difference in your overall health...

If you utilize all three, it will change your life.
Now, before anything, let me say that traditional cancer treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation) does its part to help patients survive cancer. Unfortunately, they don't address the root cause of cancer. They treat the tumors that result. They kill the cancer cells and a lot of healthy cells along the way. Conventional cancer modalities treat the disease... not the patient.

Even oncologists who understand that toxins and inflammation are the underlying cause of millions of deaths globally from cancer every year aren't addressing prevention techniques that will keep these patients from coming back with another cancer in a year or five years.

Using a Ketogenic Diet to Fight Cancer

Cancer cells love glucose - it is essential to their survival. This article goes in depth into the Ketogenic diet - a diet of low or no glucose, high ´good fat´ and lowish protein, which is claimed to have the potential to manage even advanced cancer cases.

The fundamental tenet of the Ketogenic Diet is that cancer cells need to ferment to survive. And to do this they consume glucose...

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.

But intravenous therapy is not just for cancer patients.  More than half of our IV patients come for various "cocktails" to help them ward off infections and optimize their health.  We offer a number of individualized versions of the famous "Myers Cocktail." Read about the Myers Cocktail HERE

Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
