Jewish Values Coaching Havurah
Make Every Day More Meaningful - Find More Meaning in the Everyday
Life Coaching is a holistic process that recognizes the connectivity between personal, professional, spiritual, and physical health. A Havurah is a Jewish fellowship that gathers to discuss, experience, and share Jewish rituals, practices, and values. The Coaching Havurah is a 10-month program of reflection and personal growth in a faith-based group setting that blends coaching strategies and life skills with the wisdom of Jewish tradition. This program will be facilitated by Rabbi Konigsburg and Stacey Zackin, Phd, MSW, PCC.

Program Dates: The First Monday of the month: March 5, April 2, May 7, June 4, (summer break), September 3, October 1, November 5, December 3, 2018, January 7 and February 4, 2019

Application Process:   Applications due on February 23, 2018
Tuition:
$180 for BSBI members who register by February 12th
$360 for BSBI members
$720 for 10-month program
             
This program needs a minimum of five participants and will be capped at 15 people.
 
Wisdom in the Winter Lecture Series
January 22nd, 29th, & February 5th
Join us for a three-part lecture series with Professor Andrew Pessin, Professor of Philosophy at Connecticut College. The series will be on Monday nights, January 22nd, 29th, and February 5th (snow date February 12th), at 7:30 pm at BSBI. $30 general admission per person for the entire series, $12 for a single lecture. $15 student admission per person for the entire series, $5 for a single lecture.

  • Your name and address as you want it to be printed on the acknowledgement
  • Which fund you would like your donation applied to
  • The purpose of the donation, including the full name of the person you are honoring and your relation to them, if applicable. (We won't necessarily know if someone is your sibling or parent unless you tell us!)
  • The name and address of who you would like to receive the acknowledgement

Please note: Some of the camps, including Ramah, have very early scholarship deadlines, so please start thinking about this now!

Hadassah/Sisterhood Bookclub
January 15th, 7:00 PM
The Hadassah/Sisterhood book club will meet in the Silverstein Center on Monday, January 15, 2018 ( NOTE change of date)  at 7:30. The book under discussion will be “Disobedience” by Naomi Alderman.  We have asked the library to obtain the book and multiple copies are available at Mary Cheney Library in the reference room.  Please plan to join us for a discussion of this book and to help choose books for future discussions.

Our book club will meet on the second Monday of every other month, future dates March 12 and May 7 (first Monday). Happy reading!

Nusach: Workshop on Chanting Liturgy with Cantor Bolts
January 16 & 30, February 6, 13, 20, 2018
The history and practice of nusach, the traditional chanted melodies of the prayer service. This class will cover the basics of nusach for weekdays and Shabbat morning. Open to all levels! Whether you’ve been leading services for years or are wondering what exactly nusach means, there will be something here for you to learn.

Sisterhood Shabbat
January 20th, 10:00 AM
Join us for Shabbat Services as we celebrate Sisterhood Shabbat and all we do for BSBI! Our members will be conducting the service and our own resident playwright and director, Rima Riedel, will be presenting a playlet based on the parshah of the week, Bo . Additionally, we will be welcoming our new members.

Sisterhood serves the wine and Kiddushim after services, gives scholarships to our children, helps support physical improvements to our synagogue, and many other functions “behind the scenes.”
BSBI Brotherhood Clothing and Tchotchke Drive
January 20th, 10:00 AM
As you know, the BSBI Brotherhood raises funds to help our synagogue and to support community organizations. To continue this effort, we have teamed up with Savers to organize a clothing and tchotchke drive. This is a great opportunity for you to clean out your closets and help us continue to support these worthy causes. We are looking for clothing as well as other small items.

Please pack your items in large black bags and bring them to the synagogue on Sunday, January 21st and Monday, January 22nd. We will have a truck on site to collect the donations from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm those days. We ask that you do not bring bags to the synagogue before the collection dates, so that they can be directly loaded onto the trucks. Every little bit is appreciated; hope we will see you on the 21st & 22nd!
Life, Universe, and Judaism with Michael Chernicoff
January 27th, 10:00-11:00 AM
Come learn what science has to say about our universe and life as we know it, then discuss Judaism’s views on the same subjects. Suggestions for upcoming topics are welcome.
Sisterhood Adventure Walk
January 28th, 9:30-11:00 AM
We are continuing our “Walking and Adventuring” on the last Sunday of each month. Our next one will be on Sunday, January 28th,  9:30 - 11:00 am. We will meet in the BSBI parking lot at 9:30 am, decide which of the local beautiful trails to explore and carpool there. We will be back about 11:00 am.

Social Action Collecting Food for Hurricane Relief Through February 9th
Thousands of Puerto Rican and other Caribbean refugees are expected to arrive in Hartford fleeing the devastation of Hurricane Maria. Hundreds have already arrived – and they need our help to start a new life.

Please donate the following unopened, unexpired food items:
  • Grace or Goya brand products including bags of rice, bags of beans, and cans of tomato sauce or tomato paste
  • Spices and seasonings including sugar, salt, adobo, sazón and garlic powder
  • Cereal: all Kellogg’s brand cereals, Cheerios, Cream of Wheat and Quaker Oats
  • Coffee or juice including Bustelo, Pilon or Maxwell brand coffee and Capri Sun brand juice drink

Donations will be distributed by the Centro de Ayuda Para Nuestros Amigos Caribeños (Relief Center for our Caribbean Friends) in Hartford, managed by the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC).
Shabbat Across America
Friday, March 9, 2018
Jews across the U.S. and Canada will come together in celebration of Shabbat. Join us at BSBI for a Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6:00 pm. Our students in grades 2 – 7 will participate in leading prayers, followed by a Kosher Shabbat dinner at 6:45 pm. Be a participant in this opportunity to share Shabbat with thousands of Jews across North America!

Help a child learn to read!
Become a Preschool PALS Reading Mentor!
Each year, more than 1 in 3 American children starts kindergarten without the language skills they need in order to learn to read. You can help by becoming a Preschool Pals Reading Mentor! Attend a training session, then select a 30-minute-per-week time slot to read to a preschooler in Bloomfield or Hartford. You can meet during the school day or after school. Anyone age 12 or older can be a mentor. Spring mentorships last 10 weeks; six-week summer mentorships are also available.
