With Our Gratitude...
Good Tuesday to you!  Since it's Valentine's Day I want to remind you that there are many local businesses running great specials today.  Take a look at BaDa Bling Florist, A New Creation Florist, Bistro 29, The Virginian, Edchadas Mexican Restaurant, and many more!  Remember to think local first.

Now to get to the meat of what we are here for, events.  We need to take the time to gather and have fun together.  This is how we learn about each other as well as our businesses.  By spending time together we are more easily able to refer business to you.  The next time we gather is on Tuesday, February 28th from 5:30-7:30 at Marilu's for our Fat Tuesday Mixer.  Come for the food and stay for the beads.

I also wanted to give some recognition to those businesses and clubs that have stepped up to help with the 17th Annual Car Show & Street Fair on March 18 through sponsorships.  These are organizations that have gone the extra mile to help in bringing this festival to life.

Our gold sponsors are Navy Federal Credit Union and Aaron's Air Services.  Please, as you go about your day, say thank you to these businesses.  Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) consistently helps with your banking needs.  Right now NFCU needs your help in finding a qualified candidate to assist customers right here in 29 Palms.  And Aaron's Air Services is here to help keep you comfortable here in the desert.  Aaron is starting to schedule your cooler service so make sure to give him a call at (760) 362-3594 so you can stay cool this summer.

Our silver sponsor is Burrtec whose statement is "We'll Take Care of It".  Not only does Burrtec handle your trash, bulky items, and electronic waste but they care for our community as well.

Our bronze sponsors are The Virginian, 29 Palms Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club of 29 Palms, Edchadas Mexican Restaurant, Beltz Portable Toilets, and Holiday Inn Express.  The Virginian is not just a night-time hangout for drinks and running the pool table.  They also have one of the best Bloody Mary's in the Basin.  The Kiwanis Club meets every Wednesday morning at the Masonic Lodge on Larrea Avenue.  I would encourage you to go and see what they are all about.  The Rotary Club of 29 Palms meets every Wednesday also, but during lunchtime at Little Church of the Desert.  Edchadas Mexican Restaurant has happy hour every day during the week and the remodel looks awesome.  Beltz Portable Toilets don't just rent for your huge events.  If you are remodeling your home you can call Beltz to accomodate your construction needs too.  And last but not least, Holiday Inn Express is a great place for family and friends to stay when coming into town.  If you don't have family and friends coming to visit any time soon remember that the Holiday Inn Express also has a conference room available to rent for anything from a birthday party to a business meeting.

These sponsorships have made it possible to secure the location of the Car Show & Street Fair back on the highway where many of our businesses are located.  They have also helped with bringing in great static displays of our military vehicles and more.  The soap box derby will race down Donnell Hill.  Live bands are being scheduled as I type this.  And last, but not least, a contract has been secured for tethered hot air balloon rides.  I'm sure I have missed a few things that are being planned so you will have to come out and see for yourself on March 18th.

If you don't see your name or your favorite business' name on this list mention it!  Our deadline is in about 10 days if you would like to see your name on all of the marketing materials.  Please help us to bring a great event to you, our community.

Sincerely,

Joni Daniel

Gallery 62-  Student Art Exhibit

There is wonderful art being done in the Morongo Basin by our students in grades K-8.
MBCAC, The Arts Coucil of the Morongo Basin, is sponsoring this exhibit, under the direction of Ed Keelsing, who is a retired Morongo Basin Teacher, and current president of the MBCAC.

Youth Art month emphasizes on the value of art education for all children. Art education is a viable factor in a total education that develops skills and knowledge for a better quality of life. Through the arts, students develop critical and divergent thinking, problem solving, aesthetic valuing, and creative skills with a variety of media.

Students' work will be judged by grade level, and selected to represent the Morongo Basin in the Southern Area show in March in Mission Viego.

In additional to the regular 2ng Saturday gallery walk opening on Saturday, February 11, there will be an additional Closing Reception on Sunday February 26, from 1-3pm to honor the artists with ribbons and a catalog of the show.

Black Rock Symposium

The popular Black Rock Symposium will continue on Friday, February 24, 2017 to feature a panel-based symposium on relevant topics affecting Joshua Tree National Park and Gateway Communities.  The second event of this symposium series will be "How to Make Your Voice Heard on Conservation Issues in an Uncertain Political Climate". Public lands face unprecedented threats. How do we insure that the advances for environmental conservation are preserved?  How do we organize to make our voices heard?  How do we apply public pressure on our representatives in Congress to act in the interest of those of us who love our parks and monuments?

The Black Rock Symposium will have a panel of individuals who can lead us on this path to preserving our recent conservation gains.  Come meet Mike Young, Associate Director of Campaigns and Organizing for the League of Conservation Voters, Brendan Cummings, Conservation Director of the Center for Biological Diversity and Lydia Ball - Van Note, Political Strategies Consultant who can provide the audience information on how to get your voices heard on a Federal Level!

Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park and Copper Mountain College, this symposium will be held at the Bell Center on the campus of Copper Mountain College on Friday, February 24, 7 pm - 8:30 pm.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact the Desert Institute at (760) 367-5535, [email protected], or visit www.joshuatree.org.

Hi-Desert Cultural Center 2016-2017 Season

Twentynine Palms Rotary Club

A packed house of Community leaders and Theatre supporters from throughout the Morongo Basin and beyond filled the Friendship Hall at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center last Thursday, September 15, as the three Morongo Basin Chambers of Commerce joined Theatre 29 volunteers to reveal the exciting 2017 "Season of Magic" theatrical season.

Theatre 29 Board President Gary Daigneault opened the event by welcoming the overflow crowd to the 8th annual event with a brief look at the remarkable history, ongoing growth, and unquestioning community support for the all-volunteer Community Theatre organization since its inception in 1999.

For 2017, Theatre 29 will present five Main Stage productions, a Halloween Haunt, a Summer Youth Theater Program, and an exclusive two-week run of a special theatrical event. In addition, new for 2017, Theatre 29 will introduce an Improvisational Theatre troupe under the direction of Chris Fleischman

Starting with the 2017 Season, Musicals will run 12 performances over a 4 week run (three performances, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each weekend) with allowance to extend the run another weekend. Non-Musicals will run 9 performances in a 3 week run, also Friday, Saturday evenings, and Sunday matinees. Each show will run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm. All shows are produced at the Theatre 29 building at 73637 Sullivan Road in the City of Twentynine Palms.

Daigneault explained that the Theatre 29 Board had looked carefully at what offerings were bringing in the biggest audiences, as a way to gauge what the community wants from its local theatre.

Citing the spectacular success of last year's "Disney's Little Mermaid" which sold out all performances before it even opened and then sold out two additional shows in an hour, he said it was clear that family-oriented productions were what the public wanted to see.

In keeping with the family-oriented theme, the seven Directors for the season took the podium, and with humor, snippets of shows and outstanding vocal performances, they introduced the "Season of Magic" themed 2017 season.

The season will start with Sylvia January 13th through 29th. Eddie Tucker will direct this hilarious comedy. "Sylvia is what happens when a smart and sassy canine meets a man in Central Park and changes his life," Tucker said.

The second show for the season is Mary Poppins March 3rd through 26th. Daigneault as artistic director and Bill Barrett as music director will team up to direct this hit Broadway musical based on the Disney classic.

Next up, the popular Broadway musical Into the Woods will be helmed by artistic director Charles Harvey and musical director Kathryn Ferguson. With a classic story that darkly twists and turns through the worlds of favorite Fairy tales and Children's literature. Into the Woods will run April 21st through May 14th.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber operetta, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat running August 25th through September 17th will bring the St. Joseph's Players of Yucca Valley's artistic director Rebecca Havely along with musical director Analisa Pilecki to Theatre 29.

The very popular season themed Halloween Haunt will continue with Freak Show for October 19th through 31st. Producer Brandon Hazel said the walk-through attraction will be both frightening and disturbing and definitely not for younger children.

The 2017 "Season of Magic" will conclude with the Broadway Classic Meet Me in St. Louis November 24th through December 17th. Multi-award winner Kathryn Ferguson will direct this Broadway musical based on the 1944 film about a family living in St. Louis, Missouri, in the beginning of the 20th century. The film debuted "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," now a classic carol.

Theatre 29 will also host a two-week special offering of Rashomon, an adaptation of an Akira Kurosawa film about contradictory versions of an assault and murder in Japan. It will be directed by Abe Daniels, an award winning director/actor from both Grove's Cabin Theatre and the St. Joseph's Players. The play will run June 16th through 25th.

In addition to the regular season offerings, Theatre 29 will also hold a Summer Youth Theater program June 26th to July 30th. Last year the program saw 64 area children from 7-17 participate.

2017 Season tickets are available now, visit   www.theatre29.org  or call (760) 361-4151.
