Friends of the Farm: Roast Coffee Company

Roast Coffee, located at 2132 E. Locust St. in Milwaukee, is one of our many CSA drop sites this season. Just a few blocks away from the UW-M campus, Roast provides a space for students and 9-5ers alike, with plenty of of natural light that's perfect for getting any job done. Roast's baristas all go though an extensive training process to ensure that each cup of coffee lives up to, the owner, Ryan's standards. A couple other baristas you'll find at Roast are Jeremiah and Brain. Jeremiah doubles as the company's graphic designer - he created the company logo and the store's menu. Brian doubles as the company's photographer - you'll find his work all over Roast's website. On their menu, you'll find expertly crafted coffee drinks as well as sandwiches with band names like Green Day and Radiohead. Be sure to visit Roast today at their store, their website, or their Facebook page! Thanks for being an outstanding friend of the farm, Roast!

We make local EASY!

Kale + Brussels Sprouts = Kalettes!

What are kalettes, you might ask? They're the brain child of British seed company Tozer Seeds. Tozer
hybridized (which is not the same as genetically engineering) the kale and brussels sprouts plants, both members of the species Brassica Oleracea, to develop the new kalette (or flower sprouts, as they're known across the pond). Their goal was to create a veggie that was at once versatile and easy to prepare. Kalettes can be eaten raw, roasted, sauteed, or grilled. For recipe ideas, click here. These "sweet and nutty" sprouts are a good source of Vitamins C, K, and B6. To store, keep them in the crisper drawer in the fridge. If you're ready to use them, but they look like they need a little pampering, simple trim the ends and submerge in ice water for a couple minutes. Your kalettes will reappear looking refreshed and recrisped!
The Dirt on the Farm:
Doing the Domes!

This year we were honored
thrilled to be excepted as a vendor into the Milwaukee County Winter Farmers' market
, held at Mitchel Park Domes, every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. What a treat to spend every Saturday surrounded by the beautiful green of the Show Dome where our stand is set up. Find our flavorful late season produce here while supplies last.  But the real star of the show is our heritage breed, organically fed and pastured pork! If you have never had a Berkshire pork chop, you don't know what you've been missing.  Plus, the bacon is some of the best you may ever eat. Our first 2 markets have been a great success.  We really feel like we are part of a Milwaukee gem.  The great variety of vendors creates a weekly food experience that sure beats the grocery store.  We love getting to talk to our customers face to face as well as getting to know other local farmers and producers. Great people, beautiful food, and delicious samples--Making local EASY! See you there.
